What is a Building Permit? The Safety Codes Act of Alberta requires that all contractors and homeowners in Alberta obtain a Building Permit prior to commencing work on buildings covered by the Alberta Building Code. (The Act also includes work covered by the Canadian Electrical Code, the Alberta Gas Code, or the Alberta Plumbing Code.) The major benefit of obtaining a permit is knowing that the installation conforms with the safety standards that have been adopted under the Safety Codes Act, and that inspections will be provided by a certified Safety Codes Officer. A building permit allows construction to proceed on condition of compliance with the Alberta Building Code. It deals with structural integrity and public safety. It is a valuable document in the event of selling a property-the permit can be produced to demonstrate the construction meets the provincial building standards. Mannville is a “open” area for the application for Building permits (and Electrical, Plumbing and Natural Gas permits). One permitting company used in this area is Superior Safety Codes Inc. (Lloydminster.) Contact 1-(780)-870-9020 or www.superiorsafetycodes.com Who should apply for the Permit(s)? If you have hired contractors to do the work, they are responsible to obtain permits unless an agreement has been made between you and the contractor then you must apply for the permit. If you are doing the work yourself, you should obtain the permit provided you are the owner and you live or will be living at the premises. NOTE: A copy of the approved Municipal Development Permit must accompany your Building Development application. If you have any questions about Development or Building permit requirements, please feel free to phone, email or visit the Village Office to learn more about these processes.
