ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools in a non-profit organization created in 2007 to transform historically under-served schools and serve as a scalable transformation model for Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the State of California, and the nation. The Partnership dramatically accelerates achievement for students in the district’s highest-need schools by operating a network of 17 schools (14,000-student enrollment) in Boyle Heights, South LA, and Watts. The Partnership is one of the largest public school turnaround initiatives in the nation. Over their first seven years, Partnership schools have more than doubled their four-year graduation rate from 36% to 77%. Furthermore, in the first year of the new Common-Core aligned Smarter Balanced exams, the Partnership closed the proficiency gap to LAUSD by 4% points in English and 9% points in math. OPPORTUNITY The Director of School Transformation will impact the transformation of our schools by providing crucial service to a cohort of schools building instructional and cultural environments that can dramatically increase student achievement. This role requires both direct coaching and support for teachers to improve daily classroom instruction, and support for principals and instructional leadership teams around overall instructional priorities. The ideal candidate for this position will be a motivated self-starter committed to transforming educational opportunities for student in Los Angeles and will assist in ensuring fidelity of implementation of the Partnership’s key instructional initiatives, including high-caliber teaching and learning appropriate for the 21st century, data driven instruction, and building a healthy and restorative culture in schools.
RESPONSIBILITIES The Director of School Transformation’s key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Developing and executing priority initiatives; using data to track and monitor progress toward goals, and adjusting course as needed Providing direct support and guidance to principals to improve the academic culture and conditions of schools in order to dramatically increase student achievement and teacher practice
Building capacity among school leaders and their leadership teams to develop effective school plans focused on high impact strategies, including teacher development, implementation of Common Core, personalized learning, and collaborative, data driven learning communities Provide direct coaching and support for teachers, potentially in various content areas and grade levels; likely to include working at times with teachers 1:1, at times in grade level or department teams, and at times larger group professional development Assisting in the development and facilitation of monthly leadership conferences; lead bimonthly conferences focusing on supervision of instruction, teacher development, building strong leadership teams, and other problems of practice Developing and implementing systems of ongoing monitoring, both formal and informal, to assess the performance of assigned principals and schools, and provide differentiated supports to ensure continuous improvement Providing school leaders with side by side support for implementing the teacher evaluation system; provide direct support and assistance to school leaders who have teachers struggling with performance Establishing consistent school wide and classroom expectations across assigned schools to promote strong culture and principles of restorative communities Helping Senior Directors to assign supports and services to schools from our instruction, operations, and family engagement teams Other duties as requested
QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will have:
Three to five years of successful full‐time public school certificated administrative experience At least three years of successful teaching experience Master’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferred Track record of success in driving student achievement in a secondary or elementary school in an administrative or out-of-classroom role Experience leading or participating in the successful turnaround of a school(s) Ability to inspire as a leader, quickly building trust and strong working relationships with school leaders, teachers, classified staff, students, parents and other community members
Passion for improving education and dramatically increasing achievement and life outcomes for low‐income students of color; a belief that all students can reach high levels of achievement with support from adults Strong belief in empowering school sites and building school capacity Knowledge of and experience implementing instructional practices that accelerate student achievement Ability to model an open and honest dialogue with all stakeholders; someone who is able to have difficult conversations in order to create the best working environment for students and other adults Reflectiveness, someone who is self‐aware and open to new ideas and opinions Experience managing and leading teams of people to outstanding results Experience leading and managing multiple, complex projects in a fast paced, entrepreneurial setting Deep understanding of Common Core standards, curriculum, assessments and effective instructional pedagogy Experience designing and implementing comprehensive, yet innovative, professional development programs; understanding and knowledge of adult learning principles Excellent communication skills, both oral and written Superb management and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with school leaders, teachers and other Partnership staff Spanish fluency preferred Strong technology background a plus; experience with and strong understanding of computer based programs/software
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS This is a year-round, fulltime position. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. The Partnership offers a competitive benefits package, including health, vision and dental insurance and a 403(b) retirement program.
