Stanhope Primary School has been disapplied from providing a broadly and mainly Christian act of collective worship, by Ealing SACRE. (17.06.15, to be reviewed Summer 2020) Aims for Collective Worship To help the children to begin to: Formulate their own coherent set of beliefs, values and attitudes; Understand that for many people there is an ‘ultimate being’ or God; Discern religious behaviour in every day life; Become familiar with the characteristics of worship and use reflection as a form of prayer; Become familiar with stories and traditions from the main religions; Reflect on what it means to be a human being; Develop a greater feeling of awe in the world and its creation; Develop their awareness of self, others and the world; Develop their ideas about the issues of responsibility, interdependence, authority, value, purpose, identity and destiny. Organisation of Collective Worship
The Headteacher plans collective worship, before each half term begins. This enables the use of a common theme for the half term. At the beginning of each collective worship, the children are asked to recall the ‘assembly theme’. At the end of the discussion or story the children are asked to close their eyes and reflect on the assembly as the leader directs their thoughts. One assembly a week focuses on worship through songs. One assembly a week focuses on worship through the celebration of achievements, good work, kind acts and good behaviour. Parents are invited to share these assemblies with the school. One assembly a week focuses on worship in class. One important festival is celebrated from each of the main religions from the school community:o Diwali for the Hindu and Sikh children o Guru Nanak’s birthday for the Sikh children o Eid for the Muslim children o Christmas for the Christian children A class or year group will lead the assembly and at the end of the day the children all come into the hall for a whole school party. The nursery and unit for children with severe learning disabilities are also included in these events. Easter and other festivals are included in the normal assembly programme. Special assemblies are also held for harvest, Remembrance Day, spring and Mothering Sunday. The school recognizes the right of parents to remove their children from collective worship, the Headteacher would discuss this option with parents before the children were removed. At the time of writing no parents are exercising this option.
