Garry Warner
Garry Warner was born and raised in Western Kansas. His parents were farmers. It was there that he learned his values and saw the difference dedicated people can make when they have a purpose and commitment. He attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas and Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) in Emporia, Kansas Garry spent forty plus years in the automobile business in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. During that time, he managed or owned auto dealerships that oversaw the sale
of more than 50,000 cars and trucks. Garry sold his dealership in St Louis in 1992 and moved to Sikeston, Missouri where he has lived ever since. Garry is currently semi-retired and works as a part time greeter at the Sikeston Walmart. Now he is writing a book about his experiences. Garry served on the Missouri Auto Dealers Association, St Louis Auto Dealers Board of Directors, Pontiac and GMC Zone Dealer Councils, GMC National Dealer Council, and was a Pontiac Master Dealer. He joined Kiwanis in 1989 and has been a member of four different Kiwanis clubs. He has held every elective office in local clubs and served as a Lt Governor three times. President’s Corner What can one man do? Sometimes you may feel that you cannot accomplish much by yourself. You might be surprised. Antiochus IV 215 BC – 164 BC was the Greek King of Syria from 175 BC to 164 BC Immediately on assuming power in 175 BC, he decided to invade Egypt, something no other Syrian King had been able to do. If successful his kingdom and power would be greatly increased and he might be able to resist Rome. Bill Reid Antiochus marched to invade Egypt. Rome sent an envoy, Popillius, to tell Antiochus to abandon the invasion. Popillius catches up with Antiochus at the Egyptian border. Popillius was traveling alone, without a legion of soldiers or even a small guard for protection. They visit. They had been friends in Rome. Finally Antiochus asks Popillius why he had come. Popillius said Rome wished Antiochus would abandon his plans to invade Egypt. Antiochus said he would consider it. Popillius took his staff and drew a circle around Antiochus and said, ” Consider it, and come to your decision before you leave this circle.”
Antiochus thought for a few seconds, and then said, “Very well, I will go home.” While Popillius did not travel with military support, Antiochus knew that Popillius had the entire power of Rome behind him. When you go out on behalf of Kiwanis, you have the power of Kiwanis behind you. You will be surprised at how many people know about Kiwanis and what Kiwanis has done and continues to do for our community. The biggest problem our club has is getting our members to go out and ask for support. We are preparing for several projects for the rest of the year. We need your help. Join us, have fun and help make your club better. Our next project is helping Hope Resource Center in early May. Plan to participate. It’s a win win for everyone.

Kiwanis Tid-Bits The creation of a Kiwanis International Foundation was proposed in 1937 by International President F. Trafford Taylor. The foundation was publicly launched at Kiwanis International’s 25th anniversary celebration in Detroit in 1940. Walter Zeller, past governor of the OntarioQuebec-Maritime District, initiated the foundation’s funds by donating 25 U.S. silver dollars. These were used to decorate the anniversary cake, slices of which were auctioned for a total of US$625. Today, the Kiwanis International Foundation receives more than US$1 million each year in donations and bequests. Page 3
John’s Jokes A blonde walks into her boss's office. "Sir, I'll be straight with you, I know the economy isn't great, but I have over three companies after me, and I would like to respectfully ask for a raise." After a few minutes of negotiating the boss finally agrees to a 5% raise, and the blonde happily gets up to leave. "By the way", asks the boss, "which three companies are after you?" "The electric company, water company, and phone company", the blonde replied.
The Bible A new pastor was visiting the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a card and wrote "Revelation 3:20" on the back of it and stuck it in the door. When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, Genesis 3:10." Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins "Behold, I stand at the door and knock." Genesis 3:10 reads, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid, for I was naked."
50/50 A young man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at a fast food restaurant. He noticed that they had ordered one meal, and an extra drink cup. As he watched, the gentleman carefully divided the hamburger in half, then counted out the fries, one for him, one for her, until each had half of them. Then he poured half of the soft drink into the extra cup and set that in front of his wife. The old man then began to eat, and his wife sat watching, with her hands folded in her lap. The young man decided to ask if they would allow him to purchase another meal for them so that they didn't have to split theirs. The old gentleman said, "Oh no. We've been married 50 years, and everything has always been and will always be shared, 50/50." The young man then asked the wife if she was going to eat, and she replied, "It's his turn with the teeth." Page 4
First Grade A first grade teacher collected old, well known proverbs. She gave each child in her class the first half of a proverb, and had them come up with the rest. As you shall make your bed so shall you...mess it up. Better be safe than...punch a 5th grader. Strike while the...bug is close. It's always darkest before...daylight savings time. You can lead a horse to water but...how? Don't bite the hand that...looks dirty. A miss is as good as a...Mr. You can't teach an old dog new...math. If you lie down with the dogs, you'll...stink in the morning. The pen is mightier than the...pigs. An idle mind is...the best way to relax. Where there's smoke, there's...pollution. Happy is the bride who...gets all the presents. A penny saved is...not much. Two's company, three's...the musketeers. Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, cry and...you have to blow your nose. Children should be seen and not...spanked or grounded. When the blind leadeth the blind...get out of the way.
Did you know ......... ? If you add together all the numbers on a roulette wheel (1 to 36), the total is the number 666. In England, the Speaker of the House is not allowed to speak. A human with his/her mouth glued to a hose, and nostrils shut, can absorb approximately eight gallons of water before bursting. (how they found this out is puzzling) People say "Bless you" when you sneeze because when you sneeze, your heart stops for a millisecond. Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history: Spades- King David Hearts- Charlemagne Clubs- Alexander the Great Diamonds- Julius Caesar ------------------------------------------------------------------111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321 -------------------------------------------------------------------
