Do what you love and love what you do! Every Month

Do what you love and love what you do! I’ve heard it said on occasion that I’m a bit of a workaholic. Perhaps. But I just consider myself very passionate about my work. If you’re not going to do it with gusto, what’s the point? I also approach my hobbies the same way. Maybe not in actual time spent on the hobby, but my commitment to it. When I learned to crochet, I’m sure I could have just purchased one hook and a skein of yarn and taken a scarf class. Then, if I decided I really liked it and could devote the time, I would invest in a few more tools, and buy a little more yarn for a project or two. But nooooo, I had to buy a complete set of hooks, every size made, just so I’d have the option of working on any project I chose at a moment’s notice. I also stocked up on various yarns that I was sure I couldn’t live without. I bought numerous books and patterns so I could plan my next project. Now I don’t spend much time crocheting, but if I want to I have plenty of projects at the ready. As far as quilting, I made a slightly larger commitment. I’ve always loved fabric. Whether it’s for clothing, home décor, or quilting. Fabric is AMAZING. I love how the colors and patterns trigger various emotions (even the negative emotion of something unappealing). I love all the possibilities of projects yet to be started. I recently took a class and made a Bow Tucks Tote. I was able to put together fabrics that I knew would look great together and adjusted the pattern a bit to fit my personality (I don’t do bows) and now smile when I see the bag. I love the process of creating. And not just the sewing it together, but the planning process (you know how I like to plan). Which fabric would look best as the pockets? Which as the handles? The satisfaction when I put it all together and looks just like I imagined (or maybe even better). For quilts, sometimes I love doing it just a little different. If the pattern uses a light background, I like to mix it up with a dark background, just to experience the new feel of the quilt. Yet sometimes I like to do it just like the pattern because I want to get it done. That’s O.K., too. My brain needs different types of projects at different times. It’s learning to be aware of what our brain needs and satisfying that need. What do you love to do? Is it planning? The actual process of creating? The joy of finishing? Do you love the sewing, but not the cutting? Then use precuts or a precut kit and get to the part you enjoy. Do you struggle with selecting fabrics? Then utilize your local quilt shop and get assistance. Do you love working with a friend so you can share the joy of crafting? Then schedule time together and make it happen. Every Month Maybe you haven’t yet discovered what truly makes your brain happy. Do Batik Club (membership required) 1st Tues you like quilting but don’t quite have the passion that others seem to have? Feb 3/Mar 3, 5: 00p m -7:00pm Maybe you need to improve your skills.
