CHAMPIONSHIP TIME Emporia State begins the championship portion of the schedule as the Hornets head to Elsah, Ill. for the MIAA Championships hosted by Lindenwood. It is the first time Lindenwood has hosted the MIAA Championships and the first time they have been held in a state that does not include an MIAA school. Three MIAA women's teams are ranked or receiving votes in the USTFCCCA/NCAA Division II National Poll with Ft. Hays State ranked 17th, Southwest Baptist 23rd and Pittsburg State in the others receiving votes. Missouri Southern is ranked 16th and the only conference men's team in the national rankings this week. TIGER OPEN RECAP The Emporia State women's cross country team took 13th out of 15 teams while the men's cross country team took 14th out of 19 teams at the loaded Tiger Open in Victoria, Kan. The women's team was led by Emily Schoenfeld with a 22nd place finish, running 17:49.2 over the five kilometer course. Mercy Perez was second for the Hornets with a 19:32.7 time, finishing 94th overall. Devyn Smith ran 20:13.1 to place third for Emporia State and 115th overall. The men's team was led by Brian Newkirk running a 25:07.8, edging out Evan McQuirk of Oklahoma Christian who ran a 25:07.9, for a 33rd place finish. Cole Bosley came in second for the Hornets in 80th place, running 26:05.9 over the eight kilometers. Aaron Taylor was the third runner for Emporia State, placing 101st with a time of 26:23.5. THE COACHES Steven Blocker is in his sixth year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field/cross country programs. He served as an assistant with the Hornets since 2009 working primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and multi-event athletes. He has coached 39 All-Americans and 21 MIAA Champions as head coach after producing 14 All-Americans, six MIAA Champions and an NCAA Division II National Champion as an assistant. Eric Wellman is in his sixth year in charge of the cross country program for the Hornets. He has coached seven All-MIAA performers in cross country as well as 11 MIAA champions and 39 all-conference performers in track and field.
LAST MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Emily Schoenfeld earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors to lead Emporia State at the 2015 MIAA Championships in Hays, Kan.
