Former Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack outfielder Bryson Myles was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the sixth round and 188th overall pick of the MLB draft on June 7, 2011. Myles, at the time, became the highest ‘Jack ever selected by a big-league club. The Grand Prairie, Texas, native, closed his one-year career at SFA by earning second-team All-America honors, and being named the Southland Conference Player, Hitter and Newcomer of the Year. Myles became the first SFA player to ever be name the SLC’s top newcomer and first player in league history to sweep the player, hitter and noewcomer of the year awards.
Myles still managed to hit .294 with a homer, eight RBI and 11. He finished fifth in the league with a .302 batting average. Myles is currently with the Carolina Mudcats of the Class A Advanced Carolina League. He batted .285 and set a franchise record 23-game hit streak for the Mudcats in 2013.
The Weatherford Junior College transfer led the nation with 53 stolen bases and ranked in the top 10 nationally in hits (99) and runs scored (69). Myles also finished 11th in the nation with a .411 batting average, leading the SLC and becoming just the third in school history to hit .400 or better for a single season. Myles became the first position player selected in the MLB Draft since both Steven Hill and Jared Pitts were taken in the 2007 draft. Hill was previously the highestselected Lumberjack after going in the 13th round in 2007. His success has quickly transpired with his professional affiliation. Myles was named to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game after a standout first half with the short-season Class A Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Despite being hampered with a hamstring injury,
