DR. BETTY WASHINGTON HOWARD SCHOLARSHIP - 2015 AWARD APPLICATION Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, an international professional organization founded by African American women, has actively promoted and encouraged high scholastic achievement for youth for more than 100 years. AKA-Lade Foundation, a 501c3 organization, fosters academic achievement at the local level in partnership with Lambda Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, by awarding scholarships to help deserving area high school seniors secure access to higher education.
APPLICATION PROCESS Selection is competitive and based upon the student’s academic achievements, financial need, and personal life goals. Students must major in elementary or secondary education. Preference will also be given to students who are majoring in special education in particular. All required materials MUST be submitted by due date. Incomplete applications are unacceptable and will not be reviewed. All applications will be reviewed for thoroughness and quality. Applicants MUST reside in and attend an Illinois public or private high school located in Cook County. Applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the website for Lambda Alpha Omega Chapter/AKA-Lade Foundation at www.akalao.org. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTSS 1. HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS ONLY- Must apply & be accepted to a 4-year college or university within the scholarship year. Student must major in the field of education. High School students classified as a high school special education student and/or who are majoring in special education will be given preference. 2. COLLEGE LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE – Letter must be submitted with the application. 3. GPA - Must have a cumulative average of “C+” (at least a 2.5 average) or better on a 4.0 scale. 4. TRANSCRIPT – Must provide an official, sealed high school transcript with the application. 5. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION – Must provide three (3) letters of recommendation with the application. Choose from the following individuals: (1) a junior or senior year teacher; (2) a sponsor of an organization, school or non-school related, in which the student is actively involved; (3) a high school counselor; or 4) a current or past employer. 6. ESSAY - Must submit a one-page, TYPED essay explaining your goals in life and why becoming a school educator is important to you. 7. INTERVIEW – Please note that an interview is not required, unless one is requested by the committee. *Please Note: Students and dependents of “Active” members of Lambda Alpha Omega Chapter are ineligible.* APPLICATION DEADLINE – SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2015 The application, transcript, letters of recommendation, typed essay, letter of acceptance and application checklist must be submitted together at one time, in one large envelope and not in separate envelopes. The required materials must be postmarked no later than Saturday, June 20, 2015. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted nor reviewed.
