Drilling Optimization Service Enhance operational performance with an unparalleled engineering process and expertise

“The Baker Hughes drilling optimization service is an integral piece of the puzzle.” National oil company

Improving Drilling Performance through Reduced Well Costs and Operational Risks Baker Hughes service solutions provide the fundamental components you need to identify your well’s unique challenges and achieve your complex drilling objectives. We will align our services, expertise, and technology with those drilling objectives to optimize performance and transform your well into a more lucrative asset. The Baker Hughes Drilling Optimization Service combines a logically structured engineering process with the unparalleled expertise of our drilling engineers–many of whom have been accredited through our differentiating OASIS certification program. This combined strategy provides the means to effectively reduce well delivery costs and operational risks, improving operational performance safely, reliably, and efficiently.

Performance, risk management, and collaboration save USD 10.4 million in Canada Optimized wellbore trajectories, combined with the implementation of structured planning, drilling, and tripping practices, reduced the occurrence of nonproductive time (NPT) related to wellbore instability. The results saved an estimated USD 10.4 million of unproductive drilling, casing, coring, and logging time on four wells.

Reducing NPT and ILT Using a Logically Structured Engineering Process Focusing exclusively on your project, certified engineers work closely with members of your team to understand the wellbore and reservoir challenges you face and identify your drilling objectives. Using a holistic approach and a proven, logically structured engineering process, we analyze data from multiple offset wells to gain an understanding of the drilling risks and performance barriers that can result in non-productive time (NPT) or invisible lost time (ILT). This analysis culminates in the development of a drilling plan that pulls from a comprehensive portfolio of Baker Hughes drilling solutions and expertise to deliver customized technologies, optimized drilling parameters, and operating procedures.

Surface Logging Services Increase safety and enhance production by proactively avoiding drilling problems

1

Operators that want to minimize the costs associated with drilling and production focus on strategies to reduce nonproductive time (NPT), increase production, and reduce risk. One such strategy is surface logging, which includes the collection and interpretation of real-time operational and geological data.

Surface logging creates a detailed record of cuttings properties— lithology, mineralogy, and the presence of oil—as well as formation gases and drilling parameters. Analysis of these records helps operators better evaluate the formations, identify ways to combat wellbore instability, optimize hole cleaning, prevent stuck pipe, and improve drilling performance. The true value of surface logging is to accurately and reliably collect and integrate the many sources of data to predict the probability of drilling events that could have harmful or even catastrophic results, enabling operators to take corrective measures to mitigate or avoid the events all together.

The Right Information: It Begins with the Data

The Right People: Certified, Trained Experts But there’s more to the story than simply gathering data. Once the information is captured, knowing what it means and more importantly, how it affects your drilling operations, is critical. Our certified and experienced surface logging experts have the knowledge, training, and handson experience to interpret the data in order to get a truer picture of what is taking place with your drilling operation.

Before certification, Baker Hughes trainees participate in an extensive and rigorous training process. Instruction begins in one of our global education centers

before moving to a rig location for field experience, on-the-job training, and assessment. Additional classes ensure that our trainees are thoroughly schooled in equipment operation, data acquisition, and quality control, and are introduced to the surface acquisition software platform. As trainees advance from logging geologists to data engineers, training continues with advanced classes such as pore-pressure analysis and drilling engineering.

predictive analytics

4

The Right Solution: Predictive Analytics Unlike many surface logging providers, Baker Hughes has the depth and range of knowledge to extract information from the data collected while surface logging and use that information to recognize potential drilling and production problems before they occur. By combining highquality data, expert interpretation, and predictive analytics, operators now have the tools they need to reduce the risk of incidents and improve the performance of their wells, regardless of the drilling environment. By monitoring drilling operations both at the rigsite and from remote operation centers, the SLS team is able to obtain real-time feedback on predetermined drilling parameters. The team looks for any kind of change in data trends, such as a variation in torque or pump pressure, a change in penetration rate, or an increase in gas levels, and notifies operators immediately. Matching drilling trends with the drilled formations—mobile, reactive, brittle, unconsolidated—enables the prediction of specific problems using our analytical expertise.

Whether the operation is drilling, tripping, cementing, or circulating, the Baker Hughes SLS team continually evaluates data trends for events such as pipe washouts, twist-offs, swabbing, and surge pressure incidents. We also perform comprehensive trend comparisons to look for indications of wellbore instability that lead to costly stuck-pipe incidents if left unnoticed. We also look for signs of abnormal formation pressure that could lead to dangerous fluid influxes. With well control as a critical concern, our flowback monitoring software assures early warning of unusual flow patterns during connections or other flow-back events. Kicks and formation ballooning are identified and distinguished from each other quickly for more informed decision making.

In all this, the team is aided by proprietary engineering software to model drilling hydraulics, swab and surge pressures, and torque and drag values. Expected vs. actual parameters can be compared to see if the expected trend is conforming to prediction. If not, the SLS team follows a strict communication protocol to report the problem. This communication protocol applies to all services provided by Baker Hughes SLS and is a key factor in avoiding major well-control issues.
