In exchange for the land, the government promised that Fort Lewis College would offer qualified Native Americans tuition-free education in perpetuity. Fort Lewis College continues to honor that sacred trust today. At Fort Lewis, we have a defined sense of our place in the academic world, as well as a clear vision of our future.

COACHES HEAD COACH DAMIAN CLARKE ASSISTANT COACH KATE STAHLIN 5 • 2007 Women’s Soccer

After spending six years as the assistant women’s soccer coach, Damian Clarke was named the head coach in May of 2007. In his six seasons under his predecessor, Jaymee Carozza, Clarke helped guide the Skyhawks to their only two RMAC Championship Tournament titles. After completing the 2006 season with the lady Skyhawks, Damian went to Mesa State for a very brief four-month stint and served as their assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach. Clarke played four-years for the Skyhawk men’s soccer team and began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the women’s soccer program in 1999, the year the Skyhawks won their first RMAC championship. Clarke was a four-year letter winner who saw action as a striker and a midfielder at Fort Lewis College. He helped the Skyhawks win three league championships during his career, including RMAC championships in 1997 and 1998, and the Colorado Athletic Conference title in 1995. Clarke also helped Fort Lewis College earn NCAA Division II playoff berths as a junior and senior. A player who rose to occasion in big games, Clarke blasted a ball past AllAmerican goalkeeper Greg Meyer in the 66th minute of the 1997 RMAC finals against UC-Colorado Springs to put the icing on FLC’s 3-1 victory. Clarke earned his bachelors degree in History after completing his course work in 2002. Damian and his wife Sherin, a former member of the Skyhawk soccer program, were married on July 13, 2002 and currently reside in Durango.

After taking a five year hiatus from the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer program, Kate Stahlin (formerly known as Kate Kelly) joins the Skyhawk for her fourth season in 2007 and the seventh season of her coaching career. Stahlin was also the Skyhawks’ assistant coach from 2000 to 2002 and the Sports Information Director at FLC from 2001 to 2002. In addition to her FLC coaching duties, she also is the Assistant Director of Coaching for the Durango Youth Soccer Association (DYSA). After graduating from Fort Lewis in December of 1999, she coached two seasons at FLC under Jaymee Carozza. She was also Carozza’s student assistant in 1998. She then started at Regis University in the fall of 2002 and spent three seasons as the assistant coach. While at Regis she earned a Master of Arts degree in Specialization Group Communication. She also coached the U18 girls team for the Denver Soccer Club from 2002 to 2003. The past two seasons, Stahlin moved back to Durango and helped coach the Durango High School varsity and junior varsity teams. During her playing career at Fort Lewis, Stahlin was named the FLC Senior Female Athlete of the Year (1999), was a NSCAA/Adidas Scholar-Athlete AllAmerican and an All-Great Plains Second Team selection. She currently ranks in the top six at FLC in career goals, career assists, career points, season goals, season assists and season points. Kate and her husband, Brian, are expecting their first child in December and currently reside in Durango.

SEASON OUTLOOK The Fort Lewis women’s soccer team is coming off a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament Championship victory by winning three games in three days last season. They loss just three starters from last year’s team and bring in one of the most talented freshmen classes in years. First-year head coach, Damian Clarke looks to make the smooth transition from long-time assistant into the head coaching role left by Jaymee Carozza. In his six years as assistant, the team has gradually gone from two wins (2000) to 15 wins and a RMAC Championship a year ago. Two seniors, Kelly Smith and Kelli Love, return for their fourth years’ on the field, while a talented class of underclassmen from last year’s team look to improve on already proven success. Last season the Skyhawks defeated Metro State, the eventual national champions in to the semifinals of the RMAC Tournament and Regis in the championship game. The Skyhawks snapped a 61-game home-winning streak held by the Roadrunners. GOALKEEPER Bree Baker returns this season to lead the Skyhawks’ between the posts. A season ago she earned the starting position and recorded nine shutouts, a 0.82 goals against average, an 84.1 save percentage and tallied a 15-7-0 overall record. She also grabbed 95 saves in her sophomore campaign. Bree Baker “Bree is really an Junior excellent athlete to have in the goal for us this season,” said Clarke. “She progressed last season each game and turned into an outstanding keeper who earned the RMAC Tournament MVP.” Last season’s back-up, Molly Mouka also returns for her sophomore season. She saw action in just over 17 minutes last season and stopped one shot. One of many talented freshman, Christine Schmelzle, is expected to challenge Mouka for the back-up roll this season. Schmelzle comes from Flagstaff, AZ where she went and played at Coconino High School. DEFENSE The Skyhawk defense loses All-Region and All-Conference player, Kristina Kranzler from a year ago, but two others return as starters in

the Skyhawks’ back line. Junior Maddie Stephens and sophomore Jessica Otero will anchor the back four for the Skyhawks. Two positions are still open as the Skyhawks look for newcomers Jessica Otero or returners to fill the Sophomore outside positions. Junior defender/midfield, Ginny Maddox will look to find her roll in this year’s team after playing in 21 games last season and 20 games her freshman year. Returner and junior, Samantha Scales, will also battle for a spot in the back row. Sophomore Jessie Davis, from Albuquerque, NM, also finds herself in the position to challenge for time on the defensive line. Ginny Maddoz “Our defense this year is Junior probably our most questioned position, but I’m also confident with the talent we have to fill those positions,” Clarke said. “Our sophomores and juniors will challenge for these spots during preseason.”

Smith return as starters at the two outside midfield positions. Ginny Maddox and a hand full of returning underclassmen will also challenge for playing time in the midfield.

MIDFIELD The Skyhawks’ midfield may be the strongest it’s ever been with all four experienced starters returning. Center midfielders, Jamie MacArthur and Kelli Love were both All-Region selections from last season. MacArthur was also a First Team All-RMAC Kelli Love member, Senior while Love was named All-RMAC Honorable Mention. “I’m very excited to see our midfield come together Jamie MacArthur this season,” Sophomore commented Clarke. “I beleive, we have some of the most talented athletes in the nation in the midfield.” Durango native, Lorin Lorin Anderson Anderson and senior Kelly Junior

The 2007 women’s soccer season should be one of the most exciting seasons to watch this fall. New talent and veteran talent will mix in this year’s team. How will first-year head coach Damian Clarke do? Can they repeat as RMAC Tournament Champions and un-crown National Champions Metro State? Stay posted, only time will tell.

ATTACK After the departure of Kate Mahler, who tied the career record for goals at FLC, heavy recruiting time was spent at the forward positions. In addition to last year’s starter, Nichole Kluk who may also be used in other positions this season, the Skyhawks return Kim Sisneros who played in 21 games last season and scored two goals. Two very talented and saught out freshmen, Hayley Hollenga and Sara Egbom, will add depth and challenge Sisneros and Kluk for playing time. Hollenga, Nichole Kluk from Air Academy High Sophomore School in Colorado Springs, has an impressive high school resume, excellent speed and great air skills. “I expect the forward positions to be very exciting this season,” said Clarke. “These girls will have an outstanding midfield feeding them great passes.”

DIRKS FIELD & VOICES OF THE SKYHAWKS DIRKS FIELD The Skyhawk women’s soccer team plays its home games on the natural grass surface of Dirks Field. A capacity of 2,000 allows students and community members to cheer on their home team. The field is named for Fort Lewis College friend and donor Martin Dirks, a former club soccer player at Fort Lewis in the 1970s. Today, Martin supports the soccer program in many ways, including financially. Some of Dirks’ contributions include donating funds, which went towards men’s soccer locker room im-

provements, the fencing surrounding the field, and the scoreboard, which first graced the field in 2004, part of the excavation of the football practice fields and part of Dirks Field, as well

as scholarship money. Prior to Dirks Field, the soccer program shared Ray Dennison Memorial Field with the football team. Starting in 1994, the varsity program’s inception, until 1997 the women were 5-11-2 in games played at RDMF. In 1997 the Skyhawks moved to their new turf, FLC Soccer Field. This field was renamed honoring Dirks in 2003. In 10 seasons on the field the women have notched a record of 37-41-11, including a 7-1-1 home record in 2005 and an 8-2-0 home record in 2006.

SKYHAWKS ON THE AIR Fort Lewis games will be broadcast on KIUP (930 AM), one of three stations in the Four Corners Broadcasting family. Other FCB stations include KIQX (101.3 FM) and KRSJ (100.5 FM). The relationship between KIUP and the Skyhawks is among the longest-running athletic broadcasting committments in Colorado, spanning more than 60 years. KIUP first began covering Fort Lewis athletics in the middle 1940s.

VOICES OF THE SKYHAWKS Phil Duke and John Mahoney Phil Duke is entering his fifth year announcing Skyhawk soccer matches.
