Gloucestershire Scoring Courses – 2010/2011 New courses aimed at the absolute beginner and current scorers!
Dear Club The development of scorers is a key priority within Gloucestershire’s Workforce Development Plan and is also a key objective and requirement for Leagues throughout the county. As a result the GCB is launching a recruitment initiative alongside the ECB advertising campaign ‘Stay in the game’ designed to encourage players and volunteers to move into scoring. The GCB and GACO are providing 3 ACO Level 1 courses over the coming months, in preparation for the season. The courses are aimed at: Complete beginners Existing scorers wishing to brush up on their basic scoring skills. These courses will be delivered by qualified ECB instructors and following successful completion of the course will give candidates a formal ECB recognised qualification (should they wish to take the exam). Provision of the training courses on behalf of GCB will be under the direction of the Glos Association of Cricket officials (GACO) using the two local Associations – Gloucestershire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (GACUS) in the north and Bristol and Western Counties Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (BWCACUS) in the south – to deliver them in locations based within the 4 District areas of the County. The priority is to recruit new Scorers to actively participate and enjoy scoring in local recreational cricket, either in junior or senior cricket or both. If they can be motivated during the training and gain enthusiasm for officiating, there will be more Scorers available next season. We are hoping to see strong support from clubs in nominating candidates for the training. At the bottom of this letter are the details of the courses we are running and an application form for clubs or candidates to complete. The cost of the course will be £40 which will include a MCC Law book and handouts.
Please note that we will only accept applications with full payment attached. It would be much appreciated if you could forward this letter on to any interested candidates at your club. [email protected] Level 1 - Syllabus Level 1 is intended to demonstrate the fundamental information needed for any scorer to progress. The two key objectives that all students will need are to have a comprehensive understanding of the Laws of Cricket and interpret how these laws affect the scoring record entries. For the participant to gain an understanding of the integral factors that affect scorers. Level 1 will require the participant to be capable of scoring at club or school level with confidence and efficiency. Scoring at this level will require scorers to be familiar with;
The method of using a simple box-type scoring record whilst ensuring that all runs recorded can be balanced.
The role that the scorer plays within the match and the essential duties and equipment that are necessary for any scorer to fulfil this role.
All signals that are used by the umpire throughout the match and the consequential actions that are required from the scorer in response to these signals.
The scoring system in terms of the runs given for different occurrences.
Identifying delivery counts and knowing when the end of the over is finished.
Balancing runs achieved throughout the match both on the batting section of the scoring record and on the bowling section.
The disparity between the laws of cricket and specific regulations that are put into place.
To complete Level 1 scorers should also have a basic knowledge of;
Which umpire has control over the dismissal of a batsman under laws 30 – 39; which dismissals the bowler receives credit for; is the dismissal possible if a no ball or wide is called; how many runs are accrued and what is the correct method of completing the scoring record?
When the ball is in play and is dead and the impacts of this on the scoring record.
Byes and leg byes and what is meant by them and the implications that they have on the scoring record.
On completion of the course the participate will have the basic knowledge and confidence to be able to bring their scoring record to a complete balance and have the understanding of why it is important to bring it to a complete close.
