Blocks: add a set of farm animals to extend animal learning. Cooking: make scrambled eggs for snack, exploring and labeling parts of the egg. Children can help cracking the eggs and scramble them. Other: Flannel Board story: Los Pollitos/Baby Chicks
Procedure:
Follow Procedures sheet given by the Wagon Train Feed
Fertilized eggs can be purchased through Wagon Train Feed (address above). Place the incubator in a central location where all the children and families in the program or classroom can see. The entire process is an amazing experience. Time it so the scheduled hatching day falls on a Monday so there is no chance of them hatching over the weekend. The chicks can be kept at the center for animal pets, donated to families if they can show proof that they can care for them (check on your city’s ordinance regarding animals for these two options) or taken back to the store within a couple of weeks. #2 Recognition of skills and accomplishments #5 Taking turns #12 Shared use of space and materials #15 Expression of self through language #16 language in conversation #27 Cause and effect #30 Curiosity and initiative #31 Engagement and persistence #32 Number sense of quantity and counting #35 Measurement Social-Emotional Development

Probing Questions: What do you think will happen on day 21 (the last day)? How do you think the chicks will come out of the eggs? What colors do you think they might be? Why do you think these eggs did not hatch (if any of the eggs don’t hatch). Do you think these chicks are going to grow to be hens or roosters? How can we tell if they are hens or roosters?
