El Centro de la Raza 2012-2013 El Puente Internship Application Overview El Puente is an undergraduate internship that provides UNM students with research opportunities, leadership development, professional field experience, and academic mentoring. The program will develop community based research projects that will enhance learning, while assisting local communities in addressing issues within their social, cultural, economic and political context. Strategic alliances will be established through community partnerships, which include community organizations and businesses, in order to provide students with specialized professional training. Students will participate in a one year academic internship by attending weekly seminars, trainings and work activities closely with their academic support team. They will also receive academic credit for completing a CHMS course “Community Based Learning in Chicana and Chicano Studies”. El Puente Internship will culminate with a final research proposal, presentation and Service Learning Project in the 2013 spring semester. Interns will: Enhance their academic, research and professional experience Increase critical thinking, leadership and entrepreneurial skills Connect academics to cultural diversity, equity and social justice Build capacity through networking and collaboration with community Participate in service learning and community based projects Connect with diverse resources and opportunities Eligibility All El Puente Interns will be selected on a competitive basis and will have a group interview. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better Be an undergraduate student with a minimum of 30 credit hours Have an interest in pursuing graduate or professional school Must be enrolled in UNM for Fall 2012 & Spring 2013 Able to commit to one academic year and 20 hours weekly Meet 2 of 3 criteria: o member of an underrepresented group o first generation college student o qualify as low income Demonstrate a commitment to community based research and service learning Have an interest in Chicano Hispano Mexicano Studies and be able to enroll in a 3 credit CHMS course in Fall 2012 and Spring 2013

[email protected] Commitment Students must display a commitment to pursue academic research and community professional service. Interns must agree to participate in all seminars, workshops and classes offered by El Centro de la Raza and its academic partners. Interns will be required to participate in a research project guided by a faculty mentor. In addition, student interns will be expected to register and participate in a CHMS course, community field experience and weekly advisement. Participants are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and enroll in Fall course - CHMS 384: Community Based Learning (Tuesdays 4-6:30pm) and Spring course - CHMS 495: Community Development. Scholarship Awards Interns will participate in a Fall and Spring semester research project under the guidance of the academic support team: faculty, advisor and community mentor. Interns will be required to participate in a Professional Service Learning Project in Spring 2013. Interns will receive up to $4,000 for an approved research project and completion of all research and academic activities. How to Apply Fill out the attached El Puente application packet.
