Business Challenge •

How do we embrace new technology while we:

Keep doing what we did in the past?

Get done what we need to do today?

Prepare for what needs to be done in the future?

Who will be the next Kodak, Blockbuster, Kmart, Sears or Blackberry?

• Thoughts: Does this generate any questions or concerns at your company?

GIS Manages the Connectivity Model Geometric Network Feeds: •Outage Management System •SCADA •Distribution Planning Models •Distribution Management System •Future Systems?

Advanced Network Modeling •

FM 2.0 = Change

FM 1.0 = Status Quo

Why Is Embracing Change So Difficult? •

History

Legacy Dependencies

Cost – time and money

Change management of people is hard

Why should we have to – is FM 2.0 necessary?

Why Should We Embrace Change? •

Influence future development direction

Allows us to focus on solutions instead of maintaining status quo

Make things better

Take organization to next level

Sobering Thought Of What Our Future Looks Like: The Aging Workforce •

Center for Energy Workforce Development -

60% will replaced by 2021

Utility Peers in 5 Years -

SCANA – 35% Detroit Edison – 33% National average for all industries - 18%

Major Risk: Profound loss of institutional knowledge

Potential Reward: Infusion of new ideas and willingness to do things differently ArcGIS Server for Administrators

Your Advanced Network Model – What’s Needed? ▪ ▪ ▪

Multiple Voltage Levels Reliable Data Integrity Critical Connectivity Information

Electric Connectivity Model Feeder Information Services Minimal Geodatabase Overhead

▪ ▪ ▪

Superior GDB Health Consistent Performance Long Term Sustainability

▪ ▪ ▪

Pervasive… Accessible… Accurate… Geospatial Information for Enterprise Systems

Implementing the Vision Two discussions at Esri User Conference spawned the plan: Schneider came onsite for FM 2.0 Strategic Planning Session We identified current Tactical Issues that had to be addressed We revisited old assumptions We argued about value of feederid inside and outside of GIS We challenged each other to paint a Strategic Vision together for the Future In the end we decided on a path forward that would accomplish both short and long term goals for all parties.

Conclusion – Embrace Change… …or at least don’t fight it •

Find positives

Re-validate your previous assumptions -

Change them if necessary

Validate the potential benefits This is supposed to make things better…verify that it really does! See the future and all its untapped potential -
