Dear Green-Fields Family,

W

ith Valentine's Day fast approaching, it gives us pause to think about what is most precious to us—our loved ones. As educators, the staff at Green-Fields understands the awesome responsibility that comes with being entrusted with the care of your children. It is in that spirit that we remain vigilant in doing everything possible to maintain a safe and healthy school environment. Whether ensuring orderly and clean classrooms or planning an emergency response plan, school safety and security has become a necessary preoccupation to the “modern school leader.” With the desire to make your child’s safety our greatest concern comes the challenge of trying to maintain a balance between having a welcoming and warm environment and a facility, which is secure from intruders. Emergency drills have become a fact of life in schools today. Consistent with the recent updates to state code, at GreenFields, we continue to build a small repertoire of emergency procedures that will be practiced routinely, including fire drills, evacuation drills and lock-down drills. Our goal for all drills is to ensure a calm, confident, orderly response to any emergency.

The staff does an excellent job of balancing preparation with the need to lower the children's level of concern, and the students always rise to the occasion. Fortunately, the district is well ahead of the curve where safety measures are concerned (e.g., cameraequipped door “buzzers”).   However, it would be disingenuous to suggest that we could guarantee that our school could be completely immune from an emergency or an unfortunate incident. And yet, schools are still among the safest places for "Creating the our youngsters. safest school According to the possible is a community effort; National School we simply cannot Safety Center, which was created accomplish this by presidential task alone." decree in 1984, “Students are 99 times more likely to be victimized in the community—on the streets, at the mall, at movie theaters, in fast food restaurants and other public places— rather than at school.” Creating the safest school possible is a community effort; we simply cannot accomplish this task alone. In an emergency situation, parents and family members can be most helpful by remembering the need to follow established protocols and procedures. Also, please make sure your emergency contact information remains current. If any data needs to be updated, please do not wait to inform us; please call the office today.

Yours in education, Jon Cohen
