Emery Hardener
Premium Shake-On Floor Hardener PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Emery Hardener is a ready-to-use shake-on floor hardener comprised of a blend of 100% pure emery, special additives and Portland cement. Emery is a natural material that is extremely hard, tough and abrasion resistant. As a result, proper installation of Emery Hardener floor hardener will impart very long life and extreme durability to concrete floors and surfaces. Emery Hardener is completely non-corrosive and rust-free and can be used inside or outside. Emery Hardener offers a superior alternative to metallic floor hardeners. It will provide a harder, denser and more abrasion resistant floor. Emery Hardener is available in a natural concrete color, battleship grey, french grey, tan, terra cotta, tile red, black, green and light reflective. USE Emery Hardener is designed to provide an extremely hard, dense and abrasion resistant floor for heavy-duty applications. Concrete treated with Emery Hardener will be very resistant to dusting, spalling, deterioration and surface abrasion. Surfaces treated with Emery Hardener will also be more resistant to water absorption, chemicals and deicing salts thereby reducing the cleaning and maintenance costs. Applications for Emery Hardener include: industrial plants, foundries, automotive assembly plants, loading docks, smelters, warehouses, distribution centers, service garages, processing plants, service garages, processing plants, generating stations, sewage and water treatment plants, resource recovery plants, paper mills, etc. BENEFITS ◊ Emery is One of the Hardest/Most Durable Materials Known to Man ◊ Non-Rusting/Can be Used in a Wet Environment (Typical metallic hardeners cannot be used in a wet environment) ◊ Superior in Wear and Abrasion Resistance to Metallic Shake-On Hardeners ◊ Easy to Apply/Less Labor Intensive Than Metallic hardeners ◊ Resists Moisture Penetration/Easier to Clean ◊ Greater Depth Per Pound of Emery vs. Metallic ◊ Resistant to Dusting, Spalling and Deterioration ◊ Interior/Exterior Applications APPLICABLE STANDARDS ◊ 100% pure emery/corundum consisting of a minimum of 58% aluminum oxide, a minimum of 24% iron oxide and no more than 4% silica. ◊ Moh Hardness – 9/8 (Diamond is a 10) ◊ Specific Gravity – 3.5 (Emery only) ◊ For heavy duty service for Class 5 and 6 industrial floors (ACI Manual of Concrete Practices)
◊
Compressive Strength – ASTM C 109 2” (5.1cm) cubes 12,000 psi (82.7 MPa in 28 days ◊ Abrasion Test – ASTM C 944 – “Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Concrete or Mortar” test performed with a doubling of the applied load and with doubling the time of abrasion. Average weight loss is ~ 0.4 grams APPLICATION It is recommended that a minimum of a 10’ x 10’ (3.0m x 3.0 m) test placement (mock up) is made using the same concrete, finishing procedure and under the same conditions as anticipated on the project. It is essential to learn about the concrete mix design. Information regarding anticipated set times, bleeding, and finishing times. The ACI Manual of Concrete Practice are to be followed: ACI 302 Guide to Concrete Floors and Slab Construction ACI 305 Hot Weather Concreting ACI 306 Cold Weather Concreting ACI 308 Curing of Concrete ACI 309 Consolidation of Concrete Placement of Base Concrete Concrete slump NOT to exceed 5” (12.7 cm) without water reducer. Concrete should have a minimum compressive strength of 4,000 psi (27.6 MPa), and an aggregate ratio (sand/total aggregate) of approximately 0.40-0.45. Gap grading of concrete aggregates in the mix design should be avoided. o o Only place when ambient temperature is between 40 -90 F o o (4 -32 C). For conditions like direct sun on warm days, or high winds, please contact Conspec. Admixtures containing calcium chloride should not be used. High range and medium range water reducers should be avoided, if possible. Base concrete shall be free of entrained (< 3%) or entrapped air when tested in accordance with ASTM C 173 or ASTM C 231. For interior concrete surfaces, use only non air-entrained concrete. Place, consolidate (vibrate) and level concrete to proper grade with vibratory (50-60 Hz) or laser screed filling all pockets ahead of screed. For voids left behind screeding, fill in with concrete. Use a highway type straight edge or wood bull float to level, consolidate and restraighten the surface. General Application Procedure Uniformly broadcast about 2/3 of the Emery Hardener after the concrete has been screeded, straightened, and bull floated prior to the appearance of bleed water on the surface. Be sure to apply Emery Hardener uniformly and to avoid concentration or piling up of the Emery Hardener. Broadcast by hand, or a mechanical spreader. (A mechanical spreader will give the most uniform results and a Morrison or Somero Spreader or equal is recommended). Do not broadcast Emery Hardener directly into bleed water.

If Emery Hardener is distributed by hand, try to avoid separation of fines and granular material. Avoid clumping material on the surface. Allow the Emery Hardener to remain unworked on the surface, and allow it to absorb water until it has darkened and is uniform in color. Emery Hardener will darken as it absorbs bleed water. Then float the Emery Hardener with weighted wood bull floats or highway straight edge to embed and integrate the Emery Hardener into the concrete surface as well as remove any surface irregularities. Wait until the concrete will support the weight of a power trowel using float shoes or a pan (combination blades should not be used). Break open the surface across the placement in the short direction. Immediately apply the remaining 1/3 amount of Emery Hardener uniformly at right angles to the first application. The second application does not have to be applied at right angles to the first application if a mechanical spreader is used. Early setting around the slab edges will occur and therefore should be finished first. After it has absorbed the surface water and uniformly darkened, float the surface with a power trowel equipped with float shoes. When the surface can support the weight of a power trowel and finisher, then power trowel multiple times using trowel blades or pans to thoroughly embed and integrate the Emery Hardener into the concrete for a smooth finish. Initially, the trowel blades should be set as flat as possible to avoid digging into the surface. The trowel blade may be gradually raised to slowly close the surface. Proper and uniform finishing is essential at this point. Do not rewet, and do not overwork. Prevent closing the slab too early as blistering or delamination may occur Do not use combination blades. Colored shake-on floor hardener applications should not be burnished or discoloration may occur. Stainless steel or plastic blades are recommended for colored or light reflective applications. Surface may be broomed or textured. During hot, dry or windy conditions, use Aquafilm from Conspec to reduce moisture loss and extend concrete workability. Use of Aquafilm during final trowling operations may cause some discoloration. Use the Aquafilm in accordance with the products written instructions. Curing Apply one coat of Cure & Seal WB, Cure & Seal LV or Cure Seal VOC at a coverage rate not to exceed 300 ft2gal (7.4m2/L. Wet burlap cure is also allowed except on colored Emery Hardener. CLEAN UP Use clean water. Clean up all tools and equipment before Emery Hardener has set. WASTE DISPOSAL Dispose of waste material and empty packaging in accordance with all Federal, State and Local requirements.
