ESU Track & Field at MIAA Outdoor Championships Lindenwood Track • St. Charles, Mo.

MAY MEANS CHAMPIONSHIPS The Emporia State track and field teams make their first trip to Lindenwood for the MIAA Outdoor Championships. LAP AROUND LAST WEEK Samuel Saidi wrapped up Emporia State's stay at the Drake Relays with another provisional qualifer on Saturday. He cleared 6-09.75 (2.08m) to place 13th in the high jump for the Hornets. Kyle Pfizenmaier had a provisional qualifier to highlight Friday's action for Emporia State track and field at the Drake Relays. He threw 202-02 (61.63m) to place tenth in the men's javelin. On Wednesday of last week Emporia State track and field had three provisional qualifiers, four first place finishes, and set a meet record at the ESU Midweek Open at Witten Track and Welch Stadium. Donald Wilcox improved on his own provisional mark with personal best jump of 24-07.00 (7.49m) that ranks fifth in the nation this year and is fourth all-time at Emporia State. The previous meet record was 24-05.00 (7.44m) set by UMKC's Dontay Taylor in 2012. The Hornets also got a win out of Payson Maydew with a time of 54.42 in his first career 400m hurdle race. That time is currently ranked fifth in the MIAA. The Emporia State women had two wins, both with provisional qualifying marks. Elizabeth Costello moved up to 13th on the national list with a winning throw of 144-05 (44.03m) in the javelin. That places her fourth on the Emporia State all-time list. Morgan Gilliland won the shot put with a mark of 45-02.50 (13.78m) to move up to 25th on the NCAA Division II qualifying list. THE COACH Steven Blocker is in his fourth year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field/cross country programs. He served as an assistant with the Hornets beginning in 2009 working primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and multi-event athletes. He has produced 31 All-Americans and ten MIAA Champions in his first four years as head coach after coaching 14 All-Americans, six MIAA Champions and an NCAA Division II National Champion as an assistant for the Hornets.
NATIONAL RANKINGS The Hornet men are ranked #32 and the women #89 in this week's USTFCCCA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Team Rankings. The USTFCCCA system ranks all teams with athletes on the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). National Team Computer Rankings and are complied by mathematical formulae based on the national performance list of qualified athletes for the NCAA Championships. LAST YEAR'S MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The Emporia State women placed sixth and the men seventh at the 2014 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City, Mo. The Hornets combined for two MIAA champions, five top three finishes, 16 provisional and one automatic qualifying mark. Payson Maydew won the decathlon with an automatic qualifying total of 7,207 points that broke his own school record. Maggie Wilson won the women's pole vault, clearing 12-02.50 (3.72m) to better her own school mark as well. Nikki Wetstein finished third in the women's 100m hurdles in 13.95 to move up to 18th on the National list. Shelby Buster had the other top three finish for the women. She threw a provisional qualifier of 138-05 (42.20m) to place third in the javelin in her first competition in the event. A.J. West, Duke Tibbs, Brady Huckabay, and Ryan Dickson were the runners up in a provisional qualifying time of 41.16 in the men's 400m relay. MAKING PROJECTIONS The Hornets have ten men ranked in the top ten of 11 events heading into the MIAA Championships. Payson Maydew has the top mark in the conference in the decathlon, Andrew Etheridge is leading the league in the 110mhurdles and Samuel Saidi has the top high jump mark this season. Donald Wilcox is ranked second in the long jump while Kyle Pfizenmaier has the second best javelin toss this year. Emporia State women have six athletes ranked in the top eight in the MIAA led by Sara Dunkin Beam at third in the javelin. NEXT IN THE BLOCKS Emporia State will play host to the Sam Williams Qualifier on May 9 at Witten Track and Welch Stadium to give athletes a last chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

MAY MEANS CHAMPIONSHIPS The Emporia State track and field teams make their first trip to Lindenwood for the MIAA Outdoor Championships. LAP AROUND LAST WEEK Samuel Saidi wrapped up Emporia State's stay at the Drake Relays with another provisional qualifer on Saturday. He cleared 6-09.75 (2.08m) to place 13th in the high jump for the Hornets. Kyle Pfizenmaier had a provisional qualifier to highlight Friday's action for Emporia State track and field at the Drake Relays. He threw 202-02 (61.63m) to place tenth in the men's javelin. On Wednesday of last week Emporia State track and field had three provisional qualifiers, four first place finishes, and set a meet record at the ESU Midweek Open at Witten Track and Welch Stadium. Donald Wilcox improved on his own provisional mark with personal best jump of 24-07.00 (7.49m) that ranks fifth in the nation this year and is fourth all-time at Emporia State. The previous meet record was 24-05.00 (7.44m) set by UMKC's Dontay Taylor in 2012. The Hornets also got a win out of Payson Maydew with a time of 54.42 in his first career 400m hurdle race. That time is currently ranked fifth in the MIAA. The Emporia State women had two wins, both with provisional qualifying marks. Elizabeth Costello moved up to 13th on the national list with a winning throw of 144-05 (44.03m) in the javelin. That places her fourth on the Emporia State all-time list. Morgan Gilliland won the shot put with a mark of 45-02.50 (13.78m) to move up to 25th on the NCAA Division II qualifying list. THE COACH Steven Blocker is in his fourth year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field/cross country programs. He served as an assistant with the Hornets beginning in 2009 working primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and multi-event athletes. He has produced 31 All-Americans and ten MIAA Champions in his first four years as head coach after coaching 14 All-Americans, six MIAA Champions and an NCAA Division II National Champion as an assistant for the Hornets.
NATIONAL RANKINGS The Hornet men are ranked #32 and the women #89 in this week's USTFCCCA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Team Rankings. The USTFCCCA system ranks all teams with athletes on the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS). National Team Computer Rankings and are complied by mathematical formulae based on the national performance list of qualified athletes for the NCAA Championships. LAST YEAR'S MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The Emporia State women placed sixth and the men seventh at the 2014 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City, Mo. The Hornets combined for two MIAA champions, five top three finishes, 16 provisional and one automatic qualifying mark. Payson Maydew won the decathlon with an automatic qualifying total of 7,207 points that broke his own school record. Maggie Wilson won the women's pole vault, clearing 12-02.50 (3.72m) to better her own school mark as well. Nikki Wetstein finished third in the women's 100m hurdles in 13.95 to move up to 18th on the National list. Shelby Buster had the other top three finish for the women. She threw a provisional qualifier of 138-05 (42.20m) to place third in the javelin in her first competition in the event. A.J. West, Duke Tibbs, Brady Huckabay, and Ryan Dickson were the runners up in a provisional qualifying time of 41.16 in the men's 400m relay. MAKING PROJECTIONS The Hornets have ten men ranked in the top ten of 11 events heading into the MIAA Championships. Payson Maydew has the top mark in the conference in the decathlon, Andrew Etheridge is leading the league in the 110mhurdles and Samuel Saidi has the top high jump mark this season. Donald Wilcox is ranked second in the long jump while Kyle Pfizenmaier has the second best javelin toss this year. Emporia State women have six athletes ranked in the top eight in the MIAA led by Sara Dunkin Beam at third in the javelin. NEXT IN THE BLOCKS Emporia State will play host to the Sam Williams Qualifier on May 9 at Witten Track and Welch Stadium to give athletes a last chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
