Strategies for Success in & the New Teacher: the Elementary Classroom Over the course of two days we will work together to build effective strategies to implement in your classroom that will enable your students to become competent readers and writers. Through the use of children’s literature we will demonstrate methods for integrating technology and planning the ELA curriculum in a way that encourages student learning. Assessment of that learning needs to be appropriately placed throughout the course of the year so that you can use that information to facilitate further learning. You will be working with Donna Sinclair and Amy Curry. They both believe in the promotion of purposeful assessment that helps to move students forward in their learning and that promotes rich opportunities for both the teacher and students in the classroom. Donna has been the coordinator of English Language Arts provincial evaluation materials for the elementary and secondary levels at the MEES for five years. Prior to that she was responsible for the elementary Cycle 3 examination and the develoment of prototype examinations at all levels of secondary in English Language Arts.

Participants can expect to learn and practice: • Cross-curricular teaching and learning strategies • How to plan for and use formative and summative assessment in ELA • Effective integration of technology • Questioning and feedback strategies

Amy is an experienced and creative educator with a passion for English Language Arts. She is currently working on a loan of service to the MEES where she is responsible for the creation of the Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 ELA examinations. Her previous roles with the Western Quebec School Board include New Teacher Coaching and Mentoring Program Co-ordinator, Literacy Consultant, and Resource Teacher.

• Reflective practice • Effective use of a variety of text types To help get you off to a good start you will also be leaving with a children’s literature book and a clear plan for using that book in your classroom with or without technology.
