We upgraded our heating systems in 2008 We have had underground leaks to repair We changed our waste management providers in 2009 The aim is to keep this at a minimum as the business continues to expand over a larger geographical area.
Waste Transfer Station At our main depot we have a waste transfer station used to recycle as much of our construction waste as possible. The waste transfer station is operated in accordance with an Environment Agency permit. We currently recycle inert material (Brick, rubble), glass, wood, metals, paper, cardboard, toner cartridges and plastics from our window manufacturing. Hazardous waste, i.e. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is collected and then sent for recycling at a local licensed facility. 95% of all materials brought into the waste transfer station were recycled during 2010. National Industry Symbiosis Programme (NISP) We are now a member of NISP, working with them to continually challenge our waste management provision and achieve our ultimate aim of eliminating waste. Where we do produce waste, we aim to recycle or reuse as much as possible.

Sustainable Energy Kier Sheffield LLP is a firm believer in exploring the use of alternative energies and technologies to reduce our carbon footprint and also to provide more sustainable products and services. This can only be done in many cases with the support of our clients. Our own in-house technical training centre has been commissioned to identify what products are available on the market and install test models for wind turbines, solar hot water and power. The exploration of new technologies and provision of appropriate supporting training courses are also undertaken. The idea is to create a centre of excellence for innovative and emerging technologies and be a part of the sustainable energy revolution. It is accepted that doing nothing to reduce our impact on the environment is un-acceptable. As the public and stakeholders awareness grows, there is increased demand that companies respond and take action. We want to be part of the solution and have the ability to respond to demand and also influence the decision making process. In support of our efforts we also have The Sustainable Energy Centre which allows us to offer assistance and expert advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders. Alternative technologies are important, but as important is the prevention of using fossil fuels, so the centre is complemented by emphasising good insulation. The use of recycled products have been used for insulation purposes where possible.

The sustainable energy centre and the waste transfer station are used as part of our commitment to supporting the Construction and Built Environment Diplomas with local education providers by undertaking site tours and delivering training sessions to 14 – 16 year olds.
Photovoltaic (PV) Photovoltaic cells look similar to solar panels but they work in a different way. Solar panels are use to produce hot water or even steam. Photovoltaic panels convert the sunlight directly into electricity. Kier Sheffield LLP has trained 10 operatives to install Solar PV in preparation for expected installs on behalf of Councils and Housing associations. We lead a team of regional champions throughout UK and work together to develop and provide installation and advisory services. We are working with NICEIC to continue training under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme in order to become registered installers of Biomass, Heat Pumps, Combined Heat and Power and Solar Thermal in accordance with the Governments recently announced Renewable Heating Incentive. We are developing our Manor Lane training facilities to incorporate additional skills as required by the new technologies and will work with our certification body (NICEIC) to provide these skills for our own operatives initially but are looking to offer the training to the market. We have agreed to install Solar PV on behalf of Sheffield City Council, with a similar agreement in line with Chesterfield. We have installed Solar PV at Stoke and recently installed on behalf of Eon at Nottingham, the first of approximately 600 dwellings and also been successful with Efficiency East Midlands and are now on a 4 year framework agreement to supply and install around 750 PV arrays per year over the 4 year agreed term. We are looking to develop our relationships with Eon and British Gas in addition to our own new Kier Energy Innovations team in becoming a key installer of renewable Energy Technologies.

In 2009 we were successful in being awarded two awards, Silver award for providing training and support to local education providers to deliver the construction & built environment diplomas. We were also awarded the top Environmental Champions award for working in partnership with Sheffield Homes and Sheffield City Council to replace the city wide existing communal heating boilers with modern environmental efficient plant which saved up to 35% of gas consumption. In 2010 two silver awards were received for “Cutting our office carbon footprint” and “Reusable store issue bags” aimed to reduce the use of disposable black builder’s sacks and replace them with reusable alternatives bringing environmental benefits, as well as reducing waste and cost. The award winning projects are featured in The Green Book, the world’s only work of reference on environmental best practice and in recognition of this Kier Sheffield LLP receives a prestigious Green Heroes shield each year.
