vercast skies and muddy conditions couldn’t keep BMX riders off the racetrack to compete in the Lake Shore BMX state qualifier July 20 in Millcreek Township. About 600 people gathered at Scott Park to watch 170 riders from across the United States, ranging in age from 3 to 50, race for an opportunity to compete in the state championship in September. MillcreekTownshiphas been home to Lake Shore BMX, formerly Presque Isle BMX, for close to 30 years and many former riders, including Jarrod Deeter, 33, of Titusville, bring their children to the track to experience BMX racing for themselves. Deeter’s son, Devon, 7, is in his second year of racing and competes locally and nationally in 40 to 50 races a year. “What I enjoy most is watching his face after he crosses the finish line,” Jarrod Deeter said. “Whether he wins or loses, he still shows good sportsmanship, and that’s what it’s all about.” Denise Shreve, 41, of Edinboro and a volunteer at Lake Shore BMX, said the event wouldn’t be possible without all of the families and other volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to running the facilities and ensuring the children get to do something they love while being active and exercising. “When they race BMX, no one sits the bench,” Shreve said. “It is a great community asset.” For more information on Lake Shore BMX, go to www.lakeshorebmx.com or visit its Facebook page.
