A quick update from the 401’s:

We are almost done! What a great experience this field course has been. Although we lacked in the o u t d o o r a d v e n t u re s , w e gained lots of fi r s t h a n d experience to take with us into the real world.

Wow, what an experience. Field school. Imagine the greatest thing you can, and perhaps multiply that several times. That’s kind of what it was like.

We had the opportunity to examine storm water ponds around the city and evaluate if they had the ability to become functioning ecosystems on their own. Cool right?! We also had the chance to evaluate groundwater contamination and produce an environmental site assessment.

Whether trekking through treacherous floodplains to examine the bedrock or trudging through the dense forests to quantify and qualify the vegetation, all groups performed admirably. At base camp, the wifi was often slow, and cell phone reception was spotty. Truly we had been thrust into one of the deepest of wildernesses known to man.

Wetland tours, composting education, soil remediation and wastewater treatment plants were also on tackled. It was a jam packed course that I’m sure we are all happy to be finishing, but leaving with great experiences and memories. Best of luck this year! Tia ENSC 501 Rep

ESSA mugs are now on sale for $10. Buy one to show your support and help reduce the number of disposable cups thrown in the trash. They can be purchased from the club office, at the bake sales, or on movie night.

We set out into the wilderness armed with our indomitable spirit, the knowledge gleaned from the week of classes and, not that it make us sound less impressive, a few experts in the various fields that we were examining.

By the time Friday had rolled around, nary a soul could be recognized in the mirror and rehabilitation into society took a minimum of two days. I can honestly say that everyone of us had gone Into The Wild been Around the World in 80 Days heard The Call of The Wild had a great time and learned a lot in Kananaskis. Ben ENSC 401 Rep

Events Bake Sale Nov. 1, 10am-3pm @ Science B

We will be having bake sales throughout the year in order to raise money for the various activities we will be hosting. So don’t bother packing a lunch on November 1, we have some fine, fine bakers in the ESSA exec squad and you do not want to miss out.

Volunteer at Zoo Lights! TBA @ The Zoo

Sometime near the end of November, there is an opportunity to help out on the activity lawn at the zoo. Perks include free entrance to zoo lights, a meal, and a free ticket for later admission... not to mention it looks great on thee ol’ resume. This will be a first come first serve deal to the first 15 people so make sure you keep an eye out for a follow-up email. Any one wanting to do any additional volunteer work at the zoo or with zoo lights should contact Kaitlyn, your VP Events coordinator, directly: [email protected]
