The Need Recently, wind turbine design optimization philosophy has been shifting from a predominant reliance on gearboxes towards an increased use of direct-drive technology with permanent magnet generators (PMGs). This trend has been motivated by customer demand for increased reliability (following experiences with bearing-related gearbox failures) and the higher power-to-weight ratios attainable in turbines with direct drives. Across the entire wind power market, direct drives will take 25% market share by 2015 (Navigant). EVR Motors 2kW generator The Product EVR Motors developed & tested a patent-pending novel, direct drive generator for variable RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) input sources. The technology is based on a unique design of the generator magnetic system and topology, which provides the following advantages. Advantages Lightweight – at least 50% lighter than others, leading to a cost LightWindTurbines Pilot with a 2kW reduction of the turbine & its EVR Motors generator installation. High efficiency – above 94%, leading to significant increase in the capacity factor of the turbine. No need for expensive transformer in off-grid systems – the generator can directly produce low voltage & high current. Target Market Small-medium scale (2-100 kW) wind turbines - addressable market of above 160K direct drive generator units annually. Large-scale (>1MW) wind, hydro, waves and tidal turbines. Our Goal In the near future to commercialize the small-medium generators technology, and penetrate the wind turbines market for this scale. The next stage is designing, industrializing and commercializing competitive generators for the large scale direct-drive market of 1MW and above. The Status Currently, seed-funded by Horizon GreenTech Ventures (www.h-v.co.il) an investment alliance by Alstom S.A, Rotem Industries & Gefen Investments. 2kW prototype is installed on a pilot wind turbine, validating exceptional technology performance. 20kW generator has been designed and ready for prototyping. Current negotiations in process for near-future installations of 20 kW and above.
