EXPRESS YOURSELF Spring Two Year 4

‘What! No TV or Playstation: what shall we do?’’

WHAT! NO TV OR PLAYSTATION: WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?

What we already know: We use electricity every day. Don’t mess around with electricity. Our Key Questions: Why is electricity dangerous? Does a person make electricity (is it man made)? Who is Roy Lichtenstein? Who inspired Roy Lichtenstein? Who invented electricity? How does a light work? Why do we need electricity? What needs electricity to work? Is Roy Lichtenstein still alive today? Where does electricity come from? What does Roy Lichtenstein look like? How does an electric car work? Where is Roy Lichtenstein from? How do they make electricity? What is pop art?

We were introduced to our science focus of electricity. We considered what uses electricity, where it comes from and how to be safe around electricity. We designed safety posters to summarise our key learning…

As part of our Pie Corbett literacy focus, we explored a selection of poems and looked for the ‘key ingredients’. We then focused our attention to ‘Poems on a theme’ (list poems), sharing our favourite as well as performing chosen poems to an audience.

WHO IS ROY LICHTENSTEIN AND HOW CAN HE INSPIRE OUR OWN DESIGNS? We used the internet and non-fiction books to research Roy Lichtenstein.

Roy

We used a planning sheet to design a game background that was in the style of Roy Lichtenstein’s art.

We learnt about the technique of pointillism and drew self-portraits using our new knowledge.

IS THIS REALLY ART? LET’S EXPLORE THE MODERN ART REVOLUTION. Debate.

“All you need for art is an idea. Therefore anything can be art”.

We created our own abstract art. We used straws and watered down paint to create a group ‘paint blown’ picture using bold colours. We then stepped back to review, considering what worked well and what we liked or disliked. Next, we returned to the carpet and looked at examples of modern art (focusing on Pollock and Hurst). We then explored and debated the key question ‘Is this really art’…

Is this really art?

“You need to use paint or make a picture for it to be art”.

“Anyone can be an artist and anything can be art”.

HOW CAN YOU USE AN ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT TO ENHANCE YOUR DESIGN?

A model of our classroom…

Working scientifically…

First of all, we were introduced to simple series circuits. We learn about the different components and importantly what was needed in order for the circuit to be complete and therefore make the different components work. We then carried out a scientific enquiry in our Topic groups to generate questions and make predictions.

Next, we experimented with different materials, using them to fill a gap in a circuit. We sorted the materials into 2 piles and were introduced to the concept of conductors and insulators. Finally, we learnt how to draw scientific circuits using symbols and used our gained knowledge to draw a successful circuit.

REFLECTION: WORKING AS A TEAM, CAN YOU PERSUADE THE PARENTS TO COME TO OUR GAME EXTRAVAGANZA? We invited the parents to come to our games morning…

We used and applied the skills we gained in Pie Corbett last half term to write persuasive leaflets to advertise our games.
