APS CREDIT FLEXIBILITY PROGRAM
GENERAL INFORMATION. Any student may apply for credit to be awarded through credit flexibility as long as student is capable of meeting the conditions necessary to earn the credits. All applications for flexible credit must be submitted per date page. Any application submitted after the deadline is subject to denial. Applications must be submitted using the APS form. All information must be complete before the application will be considered for approval. Further supporting documentation may be required. All flexible credit work must be completed by May 10. Credit may count toward a graduation requirement or an elective. Credit may be earned by: o completing courses, o demonstrating mastery of subject areas through assessments, o pursuing approved educational options beyond the school building and/or school day, or o completing any combination of the above. An appeals process is available. SCHEDULING. Students are expected to participate in the traditional scheduling process with all students. Students will not be enrolled in classes reflecting the credit flexibility proposal until all paperwork is completed, submitted, and approved. GRADING. Grades will be issued and credit awarded through demonstration of mastery of the course competencies. Course credit granted through flexible credit options will be recorded on the transcript the same as other credits. Grades and credits will be included in the grade point average and reported on official transcripts. Grades must be posted on the transcript before a credit can count toward graduation. There are no weighted grades for credits earned through credit flexibility. COSTS. Costs assumed by parents/guardians/families for participation in the credit flexibility program will depend upon the option selected and the Ohio Department of Education policies and guidelines. Upon approval of a credit flexibility plan, a cost agreement contract will delineate the responsibilities assumed by parents/guardians/families and Akron Public Schools. SENIORS. All senior flexible credits are to be completed by January 29 in order to be processed and awarded before the second semester begins. No new flexible credit will be initiated for the second semester of a student’s senior year. ATHLETES. Credits attempted through credit flexibility will be factored into OHSAA/NCAA eligibility consideration. Students wishing to pursue OHSAA/NCAA athletics are responsible for ensuring that they meet all appropriate requirements. TESTING OUT. A minimum grade of 80% must be achieved on a test to show mastery and appear on the transcript. Students may attempt to test out of the same class two times. Tests are a maximum of 90 minutes in length. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) TESTS. The College Board will allow the AP subject area to be listed on the transcript without sitting in the class if a student scores 3 or better on the associated AP exam. Students wishing to take an AP test without sitting in the class must complete and submit an APS credit flexibility application to test out and register at an approved testing site to take the test during the national administration in May. Grades will be returned in July. Personalized Options

APS CREDIT FLEXIBILITY PROGRAM OFF-SCHOOL GROUNDS. Credit flexibility plans may include activities that occur outside of school. Examples of these are mentorships, internships, service learning, and educational travel. However, parents of students proposing plans that include these or other similar activities will be required to sign a waiver holding the district harmless for any injuries or damages that occur in the course of a student’s participation in an activity outside district facilities and without staff supervision as a precondition of the plan’s approval. Students participating in field-based credit flexibility activities (internships, mentorships with business and community organizations, etc.) shall be required to adhere to safety rules and standards of behavior and appearance appropriate for the activity setting. APS may revoke an approved credit flexibility plan and/or reassign the student to another setting at its discretion if the host setting reports significant misconduct, tardiness or absence on the part of the student. TRANSFER. Transfer students with flexible credits in progress must present all materials and paperwork from the sending district. This will be considered an official application in APS. The receiving site coordinator/principal/counselor/mentor teacher will collaborate to determine the next steps. Credits already awarded in another district will be considered as awarded in APS. The site coordinator/principal/mentor teacher will review the transfer credit to determine where it fits in the APS program of study. If an APS student transfers to another district in Ohio, the student may request that APS forward a copy of the approved credit flexibility option paperwork to the new district for their consideration. It is the decision of the receiving district how to proceed. EXCLUSIONS. No flexible credit may be contracted or counted retroactively. Therefore any courses taken or experiences gained prior to approval will not be granted to students. Court-mandated community service work will not be considered for flexible credit. APS reserves the right to revoke the credit flexibility approval for issues involving plagiarism, copyright violation or similar academic honesty concerns. NON-COMPLETION. Students have until the end of the third week of the semester to withdraw their request for flexible credit before it is designated on report cards and transcripts as a failing grade. For yearlong classes and for first semester classes, this date is in September. For second semester classes, this date is in February. If a student fails to make adequate progress or complete the contracted flexible credit option in a reasonable time period as determined by the principal and the mentor teacher/site coordinator/original credit plan, the approval to continue the proposed credit option will be revoked and a failing grade may be awarded. Transcripts will reflect this decision. If a student is unable to complete a flexible credit option due to a medically documented illness or other legitimate reason, the principal after discussion with the student and others (mentor teacher/counselor/site coordinator) may extend the time permitted and/or revise the requirements. If a student is unable to complete a flexible credit option and there has been a medically documented illness or other legitimate reason, the application may be revoked by the principal after discussion with the student and others (mentor teacher/counselor/site coordinator) without posting a failing grade.
APPEALS PROCESS. Personalized Options
7
APS CREDIT FLEXIBILITY PROGRAM
If you wish to make an appeal regarding your Flexible Credit Option, you must submit a written explanation of your concerns. This report must include the reason(s) that you are appealing and/or a rationale of your concern(s). It can be no longer than one page in length. When this is completed, please give the appeal and copies of all credit flexibility paperwork to your school’s Site Coordinator no later than five school days after decisions have been made regarding your proposal or receiving your grade. The school coordinator and principal will then meet to determine the process to resolve the appeal. The appeal may be referred to a school committee for discussion and resolution or may be sent to the district team to hear the appeal. •
If the coordinator and principal determine that the appeal can be handled at the school, the coordinator will convene a meeting to handle the appeal. Personnel handling the appeal will be different from those who made the original decision. The committee will consist of an administrator, a teacher in the relevant subject area and a counselor. Others may be asked to sit on the team on a case-by-case basis. The student will be informed of the decision at the end of the committee’s deliberations.
•
If the coordinator and principal determine that the appeal should be handled at the district level, then the school’s coordinator will inform the district credit flexibility team of the appeal request and copy all paperwork submitted by the student and send the copy to the district credit flexibility coordinator. The school keeps the original paperwork. o The district appeals team will consist of a member of the appropriate curriculum department, the counseling department, an administrator and a teacher. Others may be asked to sit on the team on a case-by-case basis. o The district team will meet within ten school days after receiving paperwork to consider appeals and make decisions. Students will be informed of the decision in writing no later than ten days following the meeting of the district committee.
Senior appeals will be decided and the student informed of the decision no later than five school days prior to the intended graduation date. Senior appeals will take priority. Decisions of the credit flexibility team are final unless overturned by the Superintendent or a directive resulting from an appeal filed with the Ohio Department of Education.

All of the definitions and explanations on this page should be used to complete the paperwork required for any flexible credit personalized option you intend to pursue. New paperwork must be filed with each option you attempt. Learning Statements. How does this opportunity connect with the learning goals and graded course of study in the class you are receiving (partial) credit for? How will this learning opportunity support your future academic and career goals? What critical skills do you expect to develop that extend beyond a classroom experience? Competencies. Competencies establish what students are expected to know and be able to do in each course in Akron Public Schools. The competencies that you select will have some natural content and skills associated with them. They can be found in the Graded Course of Study on the APS website (www.akronschools.com) and the Ohio Department of Education website (www.ode.state.oh.us). Activities. These are the actions that you are planning to take to fulfill your Learning Statements and meet the competencies. They can include, but are not limited to, private instruction, apprenticeships, community service, independent study, portfolio projects, performance groups, research-based projects, and/or other contracted activities. They provide checkpoints and discussion for your meetings with your mentor/supervising teacher. Plans for attendance must be included in this section of the paperwork. Assessment. Final Project. Presentation. Evaluation. This is the way for you to show mastery and demonstrate evidence of learning in your particular area. It can include an endof-course exam, performances, presentations of knowledge gained, portfolio of work, or other options. All options must be aligned with clearly defined educational standards and be appropriate representations of the standards/competencies students are expected to achieve. All evaluations must include feedback to you from the teacher, panel, and/or evaluators using a specific rubric. You are to create this rubric with your mentor/supervising teacher then have it approved by your school facilitator/department chair/committee at the start of your project. It is your responsibility to present the approved rubric to all who will be involved in the assessment at least one week prior to your final evaluation. You will receive the evaluation results and your grade one week after the evaluation/assessment. Grading and Awarding Credit. Grades will be issued and credit awarded through your demonstration of mastery of the course competencies. Course credit granted through flexible credit personalized option will be recorded the same as other credits. Grades and credits will be included in your grade point average and reported on your official transcripts. Two grading options are available: A, B, C, F (APS-established grading scale) and Pass/Fail. The option you are choosing must be included in the Activities section.

ONLY STUDENT ATHLETES MUST COMPLETE THIS PAGE. IT MUST BE TURNED IN WITH THE APPLICATION. The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) has credit flexibility guidelines. If choosing this option, please speak with your Athletic Director. www.ohsaa.org Student athletes must be enrolled in and passing five one-credit courses, or the equivalent, each of which counts toward graduation during the preceding grading period to be eligible to participate in athletics. Testing Out of a class would not count as one of the five one-credit courses.
Students working on approved credit flexibility proposals will receive a progress report during and at the end of each grading period. If passing, the credit flexibility proposal would count toward the five credits if it is on the student’s schedule during the required timeframe. If no work has been completed or if the work is not of a level to receive a passing grade, the credit flexibility proposal cannot be used as part of the five credit requirement. Any work completed or submitted during the summer does not count toward athletic eligibility.
NCAA has qualification limitations on the Credit Flexibility Program. If choosing this option, please speak with your Athletic Director.
