Test Method: 4 Point Bend, loaded at constant displacement rate Procedure:

A total of 18 3D printed abs plastic specimens were tested. 3 specimens were created at each of 6 different extrusion widths. All other variables were held constant: (20% Rectillinear Infill at 45 Deg Side Orientation, 1 perimeter on all sides, 0.3mm layers).

Conclusions: The optimal extrusion width in this particular test batch was 0.525 mm (or 1.05 times the 5mm nozzle diameter used to make the specimens. This also happens to be the default setting). See Results Graph & Discussion on next page.

Notice in photo 1 that increasing the extrusion width changed how the infill pattern was laid out. My assumption is that Slic3r is tries to compensate for the thicker extrusion widths by increasing the infill spacing in an attempt to keep the selected % infill constant. Slic3r failed to compensate enough for that though because I measured an increase in mass on specimens as the extrusion width was increased. For this reason I had to calculate the ultimate stress per unit weight for each specimen to account for the added strength that the heavier specimens would have. Then I graphed the results as seen below (note: higher points on the graph indicates stronger parts). I expected to see a more predictable pattern than this. After doing some more research and reviewing these results I determined that Slic3r must be doing some complicated calculations based on the selected extrusion width. I also believe that Slicer may have changed this algorithm in subsequent versions of its software. This test batch was a good start to determining the effects of extrusion width on print strength, but this test will need to be repeated with the most up to date version of Slic3r. All I can recomend for now is to leave the extrustion width setting at its default value.
