UPDATE FROM THE

Facility Design Team In September 2016, as part of Salem’s Mission Assessment plan, a team was charged by the Salem council to work toward needed updates to the Salem building. Over the next twelve months the Facility Design Team (FDT) interviewed three architectural firms and partnered with Miller Architects & Builders to assess needs and priorities. In September 2017, the Salem council accepted a schematic design (a preliminary concept) from the FDT and proposed moving ahead with the congregation’s approval. A congregational meeting was held in October 2017, and affirmed the plan for updating, improving and expanding Salem’s church building and preliminary project budget. Due to budget issues, the council decided to postpone the beginning of any capital campaign work until 2018. The FDT is now in the process of interviewing three fundraising firms to guide Salem through a capital campaign. The FDT expects to recommend a firm to the Salem council at its April meeting; if the council approves moving forward, a capital campaign would begin at a time under advisement of the fundraiser. The Facility Design Team members are Tim Hickey and Jerry Snyder, cochairs; Scott Faulkner, Regg Glawe, Terri Gustafson, Rick Lambie, Rick O’Connor, Helene Peterson, and Pastor Elise Rothfusz.

Reflecting during Lent

Pastor’s Page

As we continue our journey through Lent, dwelling more deeply in Christ’s call for us to follow him, walk with him, and die with him (and die to ourselves), I offer this poem for your reflection.

“Meadowbrook Place” Housing Proposal A couple weeks ago, word came out about a potential multi-family housing complex to be located west of Salem. Pastor Elise and four others met with Christine Kahl, the CEO of the nonprofit South Side Office of Concern last week, and then about thirteen Salem members attending a public forum about this proposal. Here are some helpful things to know:

• This proposal is only in the initial stages. Currently applications are being made for funding to buy the land; this includes environmental studies. Once initial applications are approved, the proposal would come to the city for approval.

• The complex would be affordable housing, with different tiers of income levels. It is not section 8 housing; the proposal is not associated with the Peoria Housing Authority.

• Applicants would be screened and background checked; residents would be leaseholders; Landlord-Tenant laws apply. Property would be owned by South Side Office of Concern and managed by Robert Cottingham Property Management Company.

South Side Office of Concern’s mission is to help provide housing for underserved populations; in this case they are filling a need for affordable housing. Read more about their work at www.ssocpeoria.org.
