FALL ON ROCK, INADEQUATE PROTECTION, NO HARD HAT, INEX PERIENCE Ontario, Bon Echo Provincial Park At 1230 on May 30, 1987, Francis F. w as leading a C lass 5.6 route on the cliffs at Bon Echo above M azinaw Lake. He lost his grip, and fell about ten m eters until a pin caught him. He had placed a #3 Rock higher up, but it pulled out. The im pact of the fall forced him into the face o f the cliff, resulting in a broken vertebra in his neck, a cut on the right side o f his head, and scratches on his legs and arms. The belayer held the fall, and w as able to low er the clim ber dow n . He then applied appropriate first aid to prevent further injury. (Source: E. Analysis On this route there is a band o f crum bly rock w hich requires extra protection. Since this w as the clim b er’s first tim e in the area and he w as unfam iliar w ith the rock, it w ould have been m ore prudent to choose a low er grade clim b to begin with.
