INDIANA WRAPS UP FALL AT BIG TEN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS The Indiana men’s tennis team wraps up the fall season at the Big Ten Singles Championships. The competition will take place at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich., Nov. 11-14. The event will include all 11 Big Ten teams. The Big Ten has 14 players ranked among the top 125 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preaseason singles rankings. The conference also had eight programs ranked among the final ITA top 75 team rankings a season ago. STIFF COMPETITION The Hoosiers faced some extremely tough competition at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., Oct. 20-25. Despite only having one player advance to the second round of the 64-player main singles draw, Indiana played tough against some of the top competition in the region. All five Hoosiers in the main draw faced seeded players. Senior Dmytro Ishtuganov and junior David Bubenicek narrowly missed advancing against higher seeded foes. Ishtuganov jumped out to a lead, taking the first set, but could not hold on against the Midwest’s third-seeded (No. 42 nationally) Marko Maravic of Michigan. Bubenicek also jumped out to a one-set advantage before dropping the final two in heartbreaking fashion, 7-5, 7-6 (7), to the eighth seed Jose Orozco of Western Michigan (No. 87 nationally). In doubles, two of the three Hoosier teams faced seeded opponents in the opening round. The lone team not to face a seeded foe in the opening round was Ishtuganov and senior Neil Kenner, who were seeded 12th. The duo of freshman Peter Antons and junior David Bubenicek picked up their first victory as a team in impressive fashion, knocking off the 15th seeded team from Minnesota, 8-5, in the opening round. DOUBLE TROUBLE The Hoosiers advanced two teams to the round of 16 in the main doubles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional. The teams of freshman Peter Antons and junior David Bubenicek and seniors Neil Kenner and Dmytro Ishtuganov advanced to the round of 16. Kenner and Ishtuganov had an impressive showing at the tournament. The duo defeated three teams to advance to the quarterfinals. The IU tandem took the top-seeded duo of Jeremy Clark and Jakob Gustafssen of Louisville to the wire, falling in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (5). The Cardinal twosome entered the match ranked 19th in the country. Kenner and Ishtuganov are 5-3 as a team this season. Antons and Bubenicek defeated the 15th-ranked duo of J. Geatz and Andrew Osario of Minnesota, 8-5, in the opening round. They then moved on to the round of 16 with an 8-6 victory over Prabojo and Prakoso Imanuel of Chicago State before succumbing to the eighth seeded Ohio State team of Chris Klingemann and Devin Mullings. KNOCKING OFF THE RANKED Sophomore Dara McLoughlin upset the first nationally ranked player of his Hoosier career in the opening round of the ITA Midwest Regional Main Singles Draw. McLoughlin defeated 15th-seeded Marc Spicijaric of Illinois, 6-3, 7-5. Spicijaric was ranked 115th in the preseason ITA singles poll.

MOVING THROUGH QUALIFYING For the second straight season, sophomore Michael McCarthy mowed his way through the ITA Midwest Regional qualifying singles bracket to advance to the Main Singles Draw. In 2005, McCarthy won three matches, all in straight sets and advanced as one of eight qualifiers to the main draw. He did the same as a freshman in 2004. McCarthy, who was the 11th seed in the qualifying bracket, defeated Craig Smith (Wright State), 6-1, 6-4, and Brandon Davis (Illinois), 6-4, 6-2, to set up a seeded affair with the qualifying backet’s seventhranked player, Lachezar Kasarov of Wisconsin. Like his previous two opponent, McCarthy claimed the spot in the main draw with a straightset victory, 6-0, 6-3. In the main draw, McCarthy bailed out to the tournament’s 16th seed Christian Tempke of Northwestern, but not without a fight. After dropping the first set, 6-0, McCarthy narrowly missed forcing a third set against the 125th-ranked player nationally, falling, 7-6 (7) in the second set. PLAYING TOUGH AT THE TOP Senior Dmytro Ishtuganov and sophomore Dara McLoughlin each played solid at the top of the Hoosier lineup at the Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational. With the format of team versus team singles, Ishtuganov played at the No. 1 position, while McLoughlin played at the second spot for the Hoosiers. Ishtuganov compiled a record of 2-2 at the tournament. He defeated Jakob Gustafsson of Louisville, 6-1, 0-6, 10-7, on the opening day of the Invitational. Gustafsson was a 20-match winner for a 2004-05 Cardinal team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. He also knocked off Saurabh Kohli of Brown, 6-1, 6-4. Arguably, Ishtuganov’s best performance came in a three-set defeat to preseason No. 38 Todd Paul of Wake Forest. The Hoosier senior had Paul down a set after winning the first, 6-4, but Paul won the second set, 6-3, and claimed the win with a 10-2 third-set victory. Despite a 1-3 mark at No. 2, McLoughlin played some strong tennis in every one of his matches. The Dublin, Ireland, native played sparingly at No. 6 singles last season. He opened with a victory over Adam Monich of Michigan State, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 11-9. McLoughlin fell in tightly contested matches with Jeremy Clark of Louisville, Eric Thomas of Brown and Brett Ross of Wake Forest. 20-WIN PLAYERS Junior David Bubenicek and senior Dmytro Ishtuganov each won more than 20 matches in singles and doubles, respectively, in 2004-05. Bubenicek moved his way up the lineup throughout his sophomore campaign, before finally settling at the No. 3 singles position. The ITA All-Academic Team honoree finished the year with a 21-7 singles mark, including a 17-4 dual meet mark. He also was 7-3 in the Big Ten Conference. Ishtuganov has been one of the top Hoosier doubles players over the past two seasons. He won over 20 matches in each season, including a 20-8 mark in 2004-05. Teaming with then-senior Jakub Praibis, the duo played primarily at the No. 2 position amassing a 17-6 dual match mark with a 6-4 Big Ten ledger.

Gonzalez comes to Indiana with a lot of clay court experience in Spain. The 6-4, 174-pound player was a semifinalist in the 2005 Los Rozas el Abojon Tournament (Madrid, Spain) and a quarterfinalist in the Villanueve de la Canada (Madrid, Spain). He is an athlete who played both tennis and soccer at the International College of Spain. SENIOR LEADERS Indiana returns a duo of senior leaders this season in Neil Kenner and Dmytro Ishtuganov. Both have enjoyed success during their Hoosier careers and are expected to make a jump in the line up during the 2005-06 season. Indiana must replace the graduation of its top two singles players from a season ago. Kenner saw the most action at No. 3 for the Hoosiers last season. He finished the year with an 11-9 mark overall, including an 8-8 record in dual matches. Ishtuganov has been a vital part of the Hoosiers' doubles contingent over the past two seasons. He has won 20-plus matches in doubles in 2003-04 and 2004-05. He played up and down the line up last season, making a stop at every singles position with the exception of No. 1. He finished with a 6-3 dual match record in winning 12 singles matches

FRESHMEN JOIN THE FOLD The Hoosiers welcome a pair of freshmen to the fold for the 2005-06 season. Peter Antons (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and Mario Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain/International College of Spain) join seven Hoosier returners for the upcoming season. Antons was ranked eighth in the New England region, and as high as 185th in the country by the USTA in the 18-and-under division. At the USTA New England Junior Sectional Championships, he teamed with Luke Rassow-Kantor of Westport, Conn., to claim the doubles championship. Antons also won the consolation singles title at the event. Antons excelled in the classroom, as well as on the court in high school. He was named All-Scholastic by the Boston Globe, Duxbury Clipper and Patriot Ledger.
