AQUATICS PROGRAM YMCA aquatics are about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone: we have a program for every skill level and interest.

SWIM STARTERS (Parent & Child Lessons)

SWIM STROKES Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

Stage 4/Stroke Introduction – Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. Class days and times varies Stage 5/Stroke Development – Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke. Class

days and times varies Stage 6/Stroke Mechanics– In stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. Class days and times varies

PLAYTOGETHER FAMILY/YOUTHPROGRAMS Family Recreational Swim – Swim & play together as a family. Please refer to current pool schedule for days and times. On holidays and abbreviated public schools days family recreational swim hours maybe extended. FREE to Members Game room – The North Brooklyn YMCA provides a safe haven where youth and their families can engage in recreational activities such as: table tennis, board games, XBOX 360 games. Stage A/Water Discovery—Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water. Class days and times varies Stage B/Water Exploration-In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

SWIM BASICS (Safety Around Water) Stage 1/Water Acclimation - Students develop comfort with underwater explorations and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming. Class days and times varies Stage 2/Water Movement - In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Class days and times varies Stage 3/Water Stamina - In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. TEEN PROGRAMS Leaders Club (13 yrs.-18 yrs.)– A safe space to be who you are! Develop leadership skills, experience personal growth, provide service to others and demonstrate social responsibility. Join your peers along with an adult advisor on skill & character building activities. Wednesdays: 5:30PM—7:00PM Teen Center (13 yrs.-18 yrs.)– Join us for Teen Night. Teens are welcome to enjoy the Y and participate in activities that include fitness, sports, the game room, and workshops...all while socializing with friends. Saturdays: 6:00PM—9:00PM Teens Take the City (13 yrs. -18 yrs.)– Learn essentials of democracy and the civic process. Become active citizens. Participate in developing and presenting local legislation, all leading up to a youth legislative session. Tuesdays: 3:30PM—4:15PM

GROWINGSTRONG YOUTH PROGRAMS Biddy Basketball (4yrs. –5 yrs.) -Learn and master the basics of passing, dribbling and shooting. Practice your offense and defense in fun scrimmages.

YOUTH PROGRAMS Ballet/Tap (6yrs – 11yrs)- Ballet/Tap classes will begin with a ballet warm up that is followed by across the floor and center work. There will be a strong emphasis on ballet terminology and concepts like turning out and lifting up. The Tap portion of the class will concentrate on building confidence through mastering more difficult patterns and steps. Meets: From: Fees:

Youth Instructional Basketball ( 6 yrs.-12 yrs. )– Learn and master the basics of passing, dribbling and shooting. Practice your offense and defense in fun scrimmages.

SEIDO KARATE (6yrs.-17yrs) – Using SEIDO martial art principles, participants develop and strengthen their ability to focus on tasks and goals, exercise self-discipline, improve self-esteem, and learn the “non-quitting spirit” of the martial arts that they need to combat the challenges of daily living and achieving success.
