MARIE CURIE

1867–1934 Polish scientist Marie Curie discovered that some types of metal give off energy called radiation. Her research led to advances in medicine and science. She received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 and for Chemistry in 1911.

DIAN FOSSEY

1932–1985 For 18 years, Dian Fossey studied the gorillas of Rwanda. Fossey made many important discoveries about the primates and documented what she learned in her book Gorillas in the Mist. She also called attention to the need to protect gorillas from poachers.

SALLY RIDE

1951–2012 In 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space when she served on the shuttle Challenger. “The thing that I’ll remember most about the flight is that it was fun,” said Ride. After she left NASA, Ride founded Imaginary Lines, a group that helps girls study math and science.

PATRICIA BATH

1942– Patricia Bath, an eye surgeon, invented the Laserphaco Probe. The tool is used to fix an eye condition called cataracts that clouds vision and can lead to blindness. Bath also cofounded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness.
