FEBRUARY PARENT’S GROUP FORMING Sunday, February 16th St. Mary’s is starting a Parent’s Group to share experiences and questions related to the joys and challenges of raising children in our faith tradition. We will discuss questions such as “how do I explain The Passion and Easter to my child,” and “what do I say when my child doesn’t want to come to church anymore.” A good resource is the book “Raising Faith Based Kids.” The group will meet on the third Sunday of the month after the 10:00 service in the Guild Room. Contact Katherine Frederick ([email protected]) or Father Steve with questions.

NAPA PUB THEOLOGY Wednesday, February 12

To all Cursillistas:

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES! 6:30 p.m. Friday, February 21st through Sunday afternoon, February 23rd

The Journey Continues is a newly formed weekend retreat open to all Cursillistas. The primary purpose is to: 

Examine our current relationship with Christ

Open our hearts and minds to new possibilities in our faith

Reignite our commitment to being Christ in our communities

Although this retreat is born from our Cursillo experience, it will be different in many ways: there will not be quite as many “surprises” and there will not be individual Palanca as we know it. Don Callison, from St. Mary’s, will be a team member. Please fill out the application below, and come join us! We promise a deeply rewarding weekend!

MARCH SHROVE TUESDAY

LENTEN COIN FOLDERS

The word “shrove” is the past tense of the English verb “shrive”, which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of Confession and doing penance. Thus Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the custom for Christians to be “shriven” before the start of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is the last day of “shrovetide”, somewhat analogous to the Carnival tradition that developed separately in countries of Latin Europe. Shrove Tuesday is commonly known as “Pancake Tuesday” due to the tradition of eating pancakes on that day. The day before Ash Wednesday is also called “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. The name predated the Reformation and referred to the common Christian tradition of eating special rich foods before the fasting season of Lent. Pancake races are often held, the most famous being in Olney, England, held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race on a 415-yard course to the finish line. The rules say a contestant has to toss her pancake at both the start and finish, as well as wear an apron and a scarf. Men, who want to participate, must dress up as a housewife (apron and scarf). The race is followed by a church service. The Pancake Supper will be held in Turnbull Hall at St. Mary’s at 5:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 4th.

As in years past, the money received from the Lenten Coin Folders will be given to St. George’s College in Jerusalem. Your generosity is a wonderful gift that helps them continue their ministry. Pick up your envelope from the narthex or church office and save postage! Thank you! St. George’s College, situated only a few minutes from the Old City of Jerusalem, is on the grounds of the Anglican Episcopal Cathedral, and is one of the institutions of the Diocese of Jerusalem. During a visit to the Holy Land, all your needs will be taken care of by the guides from St. George’s College, as you tour the sights, meet the people of the land and study the Bible in a new context. You will be introduced to archaeological sites and holy places, churches, mosques and synagogues, immersing you in the various exotic cultures of the Middle East.

Praying with St. Ignatius Ignatius of Loyola (14911556) was a Spanish knight from a local Basque noble family, a hermit, and priest who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He underwent a spiritual conversion after being wounded in 1521. He abandoned his military life and devoted himself to labor for God, following the example of leaders such as Francis of Assisi. He experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, and began praying seven hours a day, often in a cave, where he formulated the fundamentals of the Spiritual Exercises. He was canonized in 1622. St. Ignatius is the patron saint of soldiers, the Jesuits and the Basque Country. Join Father Steve on Thursday evenings at 7:00 beginning March 6th, to “Pray with St. Ignatius.”

Can You Hear Me Now? The Hearing Foundation (Ear of the Lion) was founded by Lions Clubs of California and Nevada in 1982. The Foundation provides hearing aids to needy and low-income persons that have been diagnosed with hearing loss, and don’t have insurance or other government assistance. Clients “borrow” hearing aids from the foundation. All hearing aids are used, and have been reconditioned, and come with a 6-month warranty. The Hearing Foundation also funds medical research on hearing loss. If you have unused hearing aids, won’t you please consider donating them to The Hearing Foundation? You can bring them to the church office or give them to Evie Boyd. The Hearing Foundation website is www.hearingfoundation.org.

STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM “CONSECRATION” As we bring our campaign to a close, we would like to thank everyone for your support of St. Mary’s and the ministries provided to our church family, our community and our world! ALTAR GUILD MEETING Sunday, February 9th 9:00 a.m. Guild Room

spotlight Eileen Bodnar “First Lady of Napa Chamber” In 1981, Eileen Bodnar, a Napa businesswoman broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first female board chair at the Napa Chamber of Commerce. Eileen’s thirty-year career at PacBell concluded as Customer Operations Manager in the business office with a staff of 50 people. She began before there were area codes, when the prefix for Napa was “Baldwin”. Eileen served as a Grand Juror in 1984-5, taught ESL, and has belonged to many service organizations. Eileen, who will be 90 next month, hasn’t slowed down a bit! Although she has given up golf, she plays bocce ball and mahjong. She volunteers at Community Projects, The Table, and is a Chamber Ambassador.

Whew! Way to go, Eileen!

ST. MARY’S GUILD St. Mary’s Guild will meet at 1:00 p.m., February 10th in the Guild Room. We will be working on our dishtowels and sharing our tips and techniques learned at our grandmothers’ knees, or from a book, and sometimes by trial and error with new and experienced crafters;. These techniques can be applied to other craft items. We are hosting the February 16th coffee hour, and will be finalizing our plans. All women interested in joining us are welcome.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH The table below represents a small attempt to “monetize” the community service hours donated by the parishioners at St. Mary’s. As you can see, arbitrarily choosing $10 per hour as our “wages”, the total is substantial!...over $30,000 per year! And, I am sure we do much more…. If you volunteer outside our church, please drop me an e-mail ([email protected]) letting me know the name of the organization, how many from St. Mary’s volunteer there, and how many hours per week you serve.
