This Weekend Kyrios Retreat No Aftershock Next weekend New Member Information Weekend Bread Partner Weekend Coffee/donuts after Sunday Morning Masses

DEAR PARISHIONERS During the season of Lent, we are asked to do three things: to pray, to fast, and to give alms. This directive comes from the scripture we heard on Ash Wednesday (Matthew 6:1-18) when Jesus asked us to do these three things for the sake of our own conversion, rather than to make ourselves look good. Prayer is, at its basic level, spending time with God. There are many ways to pray. We can pray on our own, and we can pray with others. Here are some possible ways to pray this Lent: 

  

Personal Prayer - Spend some time with God, just talking to Him. That seems to be how Jesus often prayed, as He would rise early in the morning to spend time with the Father. St. Raphael Church is open during the day and evening for prayer. Spiritual reading or devotionals – The Little Black Books (purple for children) are one example, and there are many other daily devotional books. Going to a Catholic bookstore, such as On This Rock, or our own library here at the parish, would give many options for a variety of spiritual books, from classics of the saints to more contemporary authors. A daily email devotional is available from BestLentEver.com Lectio Divina is praying with scripture. Read the Gospel for each day. You can find the daily readings at usccb.org/bible/readings/ Read the Gospel slowly, and look for words or phrases that capture your attention. Be quiet for a few minutes of reflection, and then read it again. Daily Mass is offered each morning, Monday through Saturday, at 8:00 am at Franciscan Courts across from church, and at 7:15 am on Thursdays and Fridays at St. Raphael. Devotions – There are many devotions, most of which can be prayed either alone or with others. The Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the Stations of the Cross are some examples. Resources on prayer can be found on our parish website at: raphael.org/resources/prayer

Fasting is eating significantly less food than we normally would eat on a given day. While most of us are asked to fast specifically on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, fasting is a good practice for other days as well. Being hungry is both a sacrifice we can offer for a specific intention, as well as a reminder of our obligation to care for those who go without adequate food. We also talk about abstinence, which is going without something. We abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent. We might also abstain from other things, such as going for periods of time without our smartphones, or TV, or alcohol, or sweets. Fasting and abstinence helps us to discipline our bodies, so that we are able to control those desires that are not of God. The more we practice discipline, the better we become. Athletes perhaps know this better than anyone, as they are aware of the great discipline it takes to be a good athlete. We need to work on our spiritual lives as well, and fasting and abstinence help us to do just that. Almsgiving is giving or sharing our money and other resources. The scriptures ask us to care for those most in need. God asks us to tithe, or give to God the first ten percent of what we earn. Most of us have a ways to go in this regard. We tend to give to God from what we have left after everything else has been taken care of. Instead, God asks that we give to Him first. It is not that God needs money, but that we need to learn how to give sacrificially. The collection at Mass is meant to help us with this. In addition to the parish, there are many worthy charities, some local and some worldwide. During Lent, Operation Rice Bowl is one way to grow in almsgiving. Our monthly collection for the Oshkosh Area Food Pantry is another. As we pray, fast and give alms during Lent, let us remember the purpose: to grow in our relationship with God and His Son Jesus, and to allow our faith to change the way we live our lives and care for others. Let us keep each other in prayer during these 40 days! Gratefully,

Mary, the Model Disciple

Mary is the first disciple of Jesus. She lived a life of perfect discipleship. What can we learn from her? Fr. Edward Looney will speak on Mary, the Model Disciple on Monday, April 9 at 6:30 pm. 2 | ST. RAPHAEL PARISH · OSHKOSH

Lent as a Family Given the many challenges facing today’s families, now is the perfect time and home is the perfect place to experience Lent. After all, home is where we rush and rest, where we hope and worry, where we love and forgive. Lenten experiences can take place in nearly every room of the house. Here are 3 ideas to try to enrich your celebration of Lent at home: 

Together we can be the hands and feet of Christ to others this Lent.

Lenten

prepare a meal together. Assign a different dish or task to each family member. Begin and end with prayer. Family Lenten Reading: Pick a night each week to read and reflect on the gospel for the upcoming weekend. The weekend readings can be found at usccb.org or in the parish bulletin. Giving to Charities: Ask each family member to find three to five high-quality, useful items that would be appreciated by those who are less fortunate. Donate the items to a favorite charity. Pray together for those who will receive them.

Reflecting on the Scriptures "Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you." When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD's messenger called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" "Here I am!" he answered. "Do not lay your hand on the boy.” Saturated in a culture of “It’s all about me”, it can be a challenge to maintain the mindset and heart that I am not the center of my world. One can be tempted to pray as if everything should go my way and that God should satisfy everything on the list of wants and desires. Then if things don’t go “my way”, I blame God---and become angry and bitter. Each weekend during our prayer at Mass---we pray the Lord’s Prayer, which is rich in meaning. AND, it is a bold and challenging prayer! Challenging, because, each time it is prayed, I pray for God’s Will to come to fruition---and NOT my own. That giving over of my will in favor of and willing God’s Will is an act of surrender each time I pray it. The difference is that I either pray as if I am the center of my world (which is egocentric) or I pray knowing God is the center of my life. In reflecting on the reading of Abraham climbing the mount with his long-awaited and only son, Isaac, I am struck by Abraham willing God’s Will over his own. Abraham said “yes” when the Lord instructed him to climb the mount, another yes when he took along the knife and his son Isaac, another “yes” as he prepared the altar, and his final “YES” when he has knife in hand to sacrifice his one and only son.

Babysitting available: for ages 3-8 (Parents: free will offering to babysitters). We encourage all children, ages 9+, to join their parents for the Parish Mission.

The gift here is the unconditional “Yes” ---the many “yes-es” Abraham gave in response to the Lord. Abraham trusted God’s action and direction in his life. While the account of Abraham hiking up the mount with Isaac is about Willing the Will of God, it is also about sacrifice. Sacrifice is not about giving something up. Rather it is about giving ourselves over to God. What does that mean? I need to be available and have an open heart to what God is doing in my life. When one person gives something over as a sacrifice, like a parent does for his/her child, it is in the giving of it he himself receives something of very great value. For Abraham, it was growing closer to God, the trust even greater following that moment. His heart grew “10 times” that day in love of God. In sacrifice, the gift-giver is the primary beneficiary of the action. And so, God, who lacks for nothing, is glad to have the gift of my sacrifices, not because He gets something great from them, but because I do.

“Help for the Homeless”

Brian Smith will present on Sound Moral Decision-Making for Catholics.

“The supplies that were given are more than toothpaste and toilet paper; they are a sign that the community cares. Thank you.” – Thomas, Shelter Resident

Feb. 27 - How Do We Form Our Consciences Responsibly?

We are collecting NEW hygiene and cleaning items for local homeless shelters and crisis agencies through 91.9/91.5FM The Family’s 26th annual “Help for the Homeless” hygiene drive. Please place your donations in the Help for the Homeless collection box located in the Gathering Space next weekend, March 5 & 6. These items to the shelters will help them direct their limited resources to providing qualified staff, counseling, food and shelter to those they serve. We will be collecting for one weekend only!

This presentation describes what is involved in making an ethical decision about important moral issues. As Catholic Christians, when we make ethical decisions we are guided by the values in the Gospels, the teachings of the Church and our consciences. How do we go about relating these three to make a good ethical decision? Are there times when these conflict and if so how do we proceed? What is a well formed conscience as opposed to merely feeling something is ethical? What resources does the Church offer us when we have to make difficult ethical decisions?

The most requested items include laundry detergent, garbage bags, dental and hair care items, diapers & baby care, tissue, etc. Your donations will remain in this community. Thank you! WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES –

“He was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white…” Mark 9:2-3 Dear Friends, This weekend we hear the Gospel reading about the Transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus leads Peter, James, and John up a mountain where they witness the amazing Transfiguration of Jesus, their teacher. Time and again, Jesus teaches and inspires His disciples, and proves through many miraculous events that He is the Son of God – which God literally tells them at the transfiguration. Teachers have the ability to inspire and motivate children. Educators in our schools and religious education programs light a fire in the hearts of our children so they might know and love Jesus. When they share the Gospel with children they are teaching them to Embrace a Life of Discipleship. Thanks in part to the Bishop’s Appeal, we have meaningful programs to teach, resources to train educators and quality curriculum. Through these programs we engage youth on their faith journey, so they too can become disciples of Christ! Please make your gift today. Contact our parish office, use the pledge card you received at home, or visit the Bishop’s Appeal website at www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give to make your gift. Thank you for your gift to the Bishop’s Appeal and for your support of St. Raphael.

It had been a mountaintop experience. The Dean had called Peg into his office and told her that she had placed first in her class and won a full merit scholarship to her first-choice university. Peg was thrilled, floating on Cloud Nine. But as she left the Dean’s office and his words started to sink in she quickly came back to earth. Her scholarship included books and tuition but her mom’s illness took most of her parents’ fixed income and she would have to find a job if she was going to furnish her dorm room, buy some new clothes for school, and pick up a used bicycle to get her around the campus. The news the Dean had given her had been beyond anything she could have hoped for and she wished she could stay with the experience, but she knew that when she got home she would find dishes in the sink and a pizza box on the counter announcing what passed for supper most evenings at her house. It had been a mountaintop experience but now she had to come back to reality. And there was no way she could ever explain to anyone how exciting it all was. Peter, James and John had a similar experience. They, too, had been to the mountaintop; and they, too, had wished they could stay. “Let us make three tents…”. Peter, the practical one, wanted to build something solid to mark the occasion. But Jesus knew better. Jesus knew that there was still work to be done in Jerusalem. And so the disciples came back down from the mountain, and “…they kept the matter to themselves.” Peg quickly realized that, like Peter, James and John, she was not meant to stay on the mountaintop. Soon she was caught up again in the world of senior end-of-year activities and the responsibilities involved in helping her dad take care of her mom. She had encountered God on the mountaintop, but that wasn’t where God lived. And that wasn’t where she lived, either. God had called her back down from the mountain. She still had much to do.
