CONTROL CENTRE OPERATOR #GasController #ControlRoomOperator #PipelineSystemController #PanelOperator So much power…so much control! You are responsible for a plant of tanks, pipes and towers that transforms oil and gas into usable products, such as lubricants and butane. Or, you control the pipelines transporting these products to market. You know what’s flowing in, what’s flowing out and the processes in between. Using sophisticated instruments and systems, you monitor the plant or pipeline remotely and make key decisions to ensure it operates safely and efficiently.

What does this career look like? As the Control Centre Operator, you monitor, adjust and maintain processing plants and pipelines. In a processing plant, much of your day is spent in the control room, watching monitors for any changes in data registered by instruments in tanks, towers or other plant equipment. If a pressure transmitter senses a change in pressure, for example, it will send a notification to the control room. You are capable of sending information back to the equipment to control it from afar. When it comes to pipelines, you control the network of criss-crossing transmission lines from a centralized control room. You’ll need a solid understanding of the integrated processes and systems required to transport oil and gas products. You’re often the first to detect any potential operational issues and work closely with operations and maintenance staff to avert any problems.

HOW DO I GET HERE? Entry-level education and experience requirements vary. In processing plants, these operators typically have up to 10 years of operating experience. In the pipeline sector, a high school diploma (or equivalent) is required. Some employers prefer a technologist or technical diploma in petroleum, power, chemical, mechanical, electrical or instrumentation engineering, as well as an understanding of the characteristics of oil and gas and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Certification Compressor Operator or Refrigeration certification may be required.

HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) • Standard and emergency first aid

What would I do? You remotely monitor and control the equipment that transforms oil and gas into useful things like propane for the barbeque or motor oil for your car. You remotely open and close valves or change temperatures when adjustments need to be made through sophisticated instrumentation. You are experienced and make key decisions on adjustments and overseeing other operators. On a regular day, your job may require the following: 4 Recording and compiling operating data, instrument readings, documentation and results of laboratory analyses 4 Monitoring flows, pressures and gas qualities across the pipeline system using a computerized control and communication system 4 Operating and controlling the flow of oil or natural gas through pipelines and/or gathering systems from a central control centre
