ELECTRICAL TECHNICIAN AND TECHNOLOGIST #ElectricalDesigner #DesignTechnologist #ElectronicsEngineeringTechnologist As an Electrical Technician or Technologist, your expertise is needed to ensure that costly interruptions are minimal. In the oil and gas industry, projects requiring electrical work are numerous – pump jacks require electrical motors and plants require generating systems. By building, testing, installing, troubleshooting, repairing and modifying electronic components, equipment and systems, you help keep things running.

What does this career look like? You isolate components and troubleshoot where a problem with an electrical system might occur. One day, you might be involved in the commissioning of a large piece of equipment on a wellsite. Or, you might be installing an electrical panel and wiring it up to different field components like a control motor. You may be in a plant office preparing estimates for a project or running preventative maintenance systems that notify you when different equipment, such as pumps or motors, need to be serviced. Typical roles include: • Electrical Project Technologists coordinate electrical upgrades to facilities, equipment and systems • Electrical Design Technologists develop and analyze 2D and 3D computerized drawings based on sketches, notes, mark-ups and specifications provided by engineers, designers and surveyors. • Electrical Estimators prepare construction cost estimates for electrical materials, labour and equipment based on design drawings, specifications, bids, quotes and business needs. • Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) Programmers program, test and troubleshoot process control equipment and system components.

What would I do? You may apply your computer knowledge and test software and hardware configurations. You research, perform calculations, assemble electrical systems and prototypes and develop 2D and 3D drawings. Other specific tasks of Electrical Technicians and Technologists may include:

HOW DO I GET HERE? Electrical Technician A one- or two-year post-secondary diploma in electrical or electronics engineering technology is typically required. Electrical Technologist A two- or three-year postsecondary diploma in electrical or electronics engineering technology, computer engineering technology, telecommunications technology or an equivalent discipline is typically required. Certification Certification is available through provincial associations of engineering or applied science technologists and technicians and may be required by some employers. A period of supervised work experience, usually two years, is required before certification. In Quebec, membership in the regulatory body for professional technologists is required to use the title “Professional Technologist.”
