NITROGEN OPERATOR #NitrogenOperator You can handle it. The extreme cold that is. Not just a cold winter, but rather the extreme low temperature of nitrogen. As in -197° C. You know all about cryogenics; in other words, you’re used to dealing with materials at extremely low temperatures. Your job is to set up, operate and maintain equipment used to generate and supply nitrogen at well sites. With a nitrogen tank in hand and your face shield securely in place, you’re pumped to get pumping.
What does this career look like? You’re ready to apply nitrogen for one of two different types of operations. For low rate nitrogen applications, you’re pumping at a lower rate for activities such as purging, which uses nitrogen to remove fluids, gases or debris from an enclosed system like a pipeline or a well.
HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma (or equivalent) is typically required. Basic mechanical skills and heavy hauling or off-road driving experience are assets. Employees must pass a preemployment physical assessment and drug test. Licensing A Class 1 driver’s licence (with air brake endorsement) and a clean driving record are required.
Purging could include sand cleanouts where you pump nitrogen into an oil or natural gas well to remove sand that would otherwise block or cause issues with machinery. At the well site, you may pump nitrogen at a low rate to stimulate a new well to start producing. High rate nitrogen applications are where you pump nitrogen directly into the well casing for the purpose of hydraulic fracturing as a means to better break open the formation. You might use nitrogen exclusively in a coal bed methane fracking operation as an expansive aid. Or, you might combine nitrogen with other fracking fluids to create a mixture that helps to reduce friction and propels sand down the wellbore. That sand is used to prop open the formation so oil or natural gas can flow out and up through the well.
HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING • Standard and emergency first aid • H2S Alive • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) • Oilfield Driver Awareness

What would I do? The majority of any physical activity required for this occupation occurs when you’re rigging up and attaching nitrogen equipment to prepare for pumping. Your challenge is to stay alert and watch your gauges, especially during night shifts. Even though it’s inert, nitrogen can be dangerous if not handled properly. You know how to navigate a world of extremely cold temperatures and the proper equipment that goes with it. Specifically, you’ll be: 4 Inspecting equipment, structures and material (e.g., performing pre-job equipment inspections) 4 Handling and moving objects (e.g., assisting during the rig up and rig down of nitrogen service line equipment) 4 Operating heavy equipment (e.g., operating the major equipment used in a nitrogen job)
