PETROLEUM PLANT AND FACILITY OPERATOR
HOW DO I GET HERE?
#BitumenPlantOperator #PipelineOperator #SAGDFacilityOperator #LNGPlantOperator You’re the keeper of a maze of pipes, tanks, pumps, boilers and towers. Petroleum plants and facilities operate around the clock and require ongoing maintenance and staffing. You are responsible for keeping these industrial facilities performing and producing.
What does this career look like? It’s your job to ensure vital process control systems and production equipment run smoothly and that oil or gas flows into pipelines from plants and out to markets with the proper specifications. This means continually monitoring and testing the products. You control equipment such as manifold and pumping systems to divert oil or gas to a tank where you can resolve any issues that arise.
A high school diploma (or equivalent) and an aptitude for mathematics, computers, mechanics, chemistry or physics are typically required. Some employers prefer a post-secondary diploma in petroleum, electrical, mechanical or instrumentation engineering technology or a production field/gas process operations certificate. Employees must pass a pre-employment physical assessment and drug test. Licensing Most employers require a valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
At an oil sands plant, your job may include operating tumblers, mixers, vibrating screens and primary separation vessels to separate the dense bitumen from sand, clay and water. At a pipeline facility, such as a pump station, tank farm, terminal or compressor station, you are responsible for the transportation of oil, gas and bitumen for further processing or to market.

What would I do? Your day may be busy testing samples, reading gauges and dials on meters, and scheduling product batches for a pipeline. If you’re running a smaller facility, you may be responsible for fixing equipment, such as a leaking valve cap. You are not only a plant operator – sometimes, you’re a millwright or an instrumentation technologist. As a senior level operator, you train and oversee the activities of junior operators. You’re responsible for health and safety, ensuring all safety protocols and regulations are followed. Specifically, you could be: 4 Shutting down, isolating and preparing process units or production equipment for maintenance 4 Operating specialized equipment to separate, measure and store petroleum products 4 Recording production data and maintaining relevant logs
