TOURISM + TRANSIT INFRASTRUCTURE CROSS- LEVERAGING INVESTMENT IN TOURISM AND TRANSIT INFRASTRUCTURE
Infrastructure and land use are inherently tied to the process of tourism, whether it is physical or economic. In fact, tourism can only thrive with the proper scale and reliability of infrastructure. Tourism development in Europe throughout the 1970’s has created mass tourism infrastructure along the coasts, including international airports, marinas, interstate highway systems and roadways. These systems enable access to amenities and sites, making tourism a viable industry. Today, European Coastal environments are emerging as top destinations and are well on their way to recovering from economic turmoil through the outputs of the tourism industry. As such, countries like Portugal and Croatia face new challenges of expanding tourism development into the twenty-first century to meet and support this demand. Through this lens, we examine the Lisbon Region and the Dalmatian Coast. Focusing on the evolution of infrastructure, our research in Portugal reveals the harsh impacts of overbuilding leading to demolition, whereas Croatia’s attempts to urbanize have left underutilized buildings in need of rehabilitation. Both regions are equipped with the infrastructure and amenities to push their tourism industries forward, however lack the economic stability to enable them to do so. Studying a range of scales and connective networks, our research critically examines the efficacy of existing infrastructure and the capacity for new resilient systems to improve the tourism economy.
