FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY From Cornwall to Gullane, the Wave Project runs surf sessions for young people with the aim of improving their emotional health and self-confidence. Built on an ethos of collaboration between end-users and their surf instructors and mentors, clients work at their own pace and lead the session themselves. Encouraged and enabled by their mentors, the clients are empowered to move at their own speed, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of pride in their work. The sessions have been proven to be clinically effective, with referrals coming from the NHS, health professionals, counsellors and children’s charities.

Developing from a six-week pilot scheme run by NHS Cornwall in 2010, the Project has now migrated up to the chillier waters of the North Sea. The Project has had great success in winning funding from BBC Children in Need and the Big Lottery, which were used to establish the Edinburgh branch, but were looking to construct a more sustainable financial future.

FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY FreshSight were asked to look at the corporate fundraising landscape in Edinburgh and identify opportunities for The Wave Project to initiate a mutually beneficial relationship. The brief also included the drafting of a vision for such a partnership, and the creation of a workshop which would prepare the Wave Project’s staff to acquire corporate funding. “We want to help thousands of kids over the next ten or twenty years - not just a couple of hundred and then run out of funding”

Jamie Marshall runs the Wave Project Scotland alone, so getting several extra pairs of eyes and ears on the task was essential, but Jamie remarked that FreshSight consultants are more than just high-flying students: 'I actually think there's professional consultants I wouldn't expect that much from'. He also noted that he was particularly impressed with the frequency of communications throughout the project and by the thoroughness of the work conducted. 'This has the potential to change the way we operate on a national basis; I feel confident that we will now be able to acquire corporate sponsorship'
