NOTES FROM THE WINEMAKER: In 2013, we selected a blend of Chardonnay grapes from Monterey County and San Luis Obispo County for layers of complexity. The growing season throughout the Central Coast was warm, dry and sunny, giving us the opportunity to select grapes from a variety of sub-AVAs for complexity. Chardonnay from Monterey County provides a crisp acidity and apple notes. At home in San Luis Obispo County, our grapes are afforded the longest growing season in California, resulting in an ideal balance of ripe tropical flavors and firm acidity – the perfect complement to Monterey Chardonnay. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and the free-run juice was separated from the press-fractions to ensure maximum flavor extraction. Approximately 20 percent of this wine was fermented in used barrels with partial malolactic fermentation to retain acidity. Aging on 100% French oak for up to eight months with weekly lees stirring created a creamy, luscious mouthfeel and texture, while imparting subtle hints of toasted oak.
