Serving Next Sunday November 2

In our adult Bible study class yesterday morning it was brought up that Christmas is not less than two months away. Thanksgiving will be here in a month and rush to the end of the year seems to travel faster than the speed of light. With that thought in mind, and the knowledge that the holidays can be a time of grief and depression for many, I would like to share this article I wrote this time two years ago. The Power of Positive Thinking

In 1952 Norman Vincent Peale published his now famous book The Power of Positive Thinking. The book became one of the seminal works of Peale and is considered his primary accomplishment by many in the world. The Power of Positive Thinking set out to help people understand that we Flowers: Dr. Wes and Patsy Lucas often hold ourselves back by the way we look at situations. It goes beyond the rhetorical question of the glass being half empty or half full and invites in honor of the reader to change their entire outlook on life, in other worlds, to think Their 23rd Anniversary more positively. The booked was panned by mental health experts as taking a simplistic approach toward mental illness and encouraging people to not seek appropriate treatment. It was equally disparaged by some faith communities as depersonalizing religion by focusing on our ability to change the way we view the world without relying in a relationship with the divine. On the other hand many famous ministers, including Billy Graham and Robert Schuler praised Peale. I would never say that positive thinking is the cure for all of the world’s ills but I have noticed that people who are able to look at a situation positively tend to have a happier outlook on life. There is a type of counseling called Solution Focused therapy that asks the client to think about what is working in their particular situation. The idea is that if we emphasize what is working and de-emphasize what is not working the solution begins to overcome the problem. Personally, I know that when I focus on what is not working I tend to become more negative, frustrated and not as easy to get along with. What would our community look like if we started to focus on what is right instead of what is wrong? I am not saying that positive thinking will cure the ills of the world but instead saying that focusing on what we are doing well has a way of helping us find feasible solutions for the things that hold us back. As we work our way toward the joy of Christmas may your days be filled with hope and the power of positive thinking. Glad to Be Your Pastor,
