Automotive dealership Fletcher Jones Chicago is housed within three inter-connected buildings – a reinforced concrete building constructed in the 1920s, a precast-concrete building constructed in the 1970s and a steel building. Showrooms are located on the ground floor and third floor of the structure. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering services for extensive exterior and interior renovations to the building to upgrade the facility’s image to be consistent with corporate branding requirements and to enhance users’ experiences. Exterior modifications included removal of the structure’s façade and installation of a new glass and metal panel façade. Architectural programming required demolition of portions of the load-bearing masonry walls to allow for expansive windows. Interior modifications included design of large openings in existing load-bearing brick walls, mechanical openings in floors and new roof framing to support mechanical equipment. The showroom and service areas remained open during construction.
