FLIGHT CAPTAIN’S CORNER The August meeting was another success with the wives being hosted for the first time in the Daedalian Room instead of the ballroom. I, for one, thought it was a more intimate setting than the ballroom, and as long as we have less than 90 people the room is plenty big enough to accommodate us. We had about 74 at the meeting with the wives and next month the staff will discuss holding all of our monthly meetings there except for the Christmas party (where we need room for the combo and dance floor.) The guest speaker for the evening was Col (Ret) Elvin Bell. (Cont. on page 2)

(Cont. from page 1)

In his capacity as the mayor of Fresno California and a faculty member at the National War College, he had the opportunity to meet many famous people from many walks of life -- especially the political, military and entertainment areas. He had so many experiences with these celebrities that he wrote a book about them. His talk centered on his interactions with several of the more notable personalities he came in contact with. It was most interesting and entertaining. Jim Weatherbee, Elvin Bell & Charlie Brown On another subject, although we had a good turnout at the last meeting, one week before the meeting we had a total of 7 people signed up for the meeting. Meanwhile, the club was asking for a fairly firm number so they could order the meals and prepare. This situation caused our dedicated treasurers, Ed Dunbar and Scotty Roberts, considerable stress in dealing with the members and the club. In fact, I believe we had the majority of the signups in the last 48 hours before the meeting. Although it worked out OK, I am humbly requesting that you all call in and make your reservations as far ahead as possible to save everyone stress and heartburn. I am not trying to Austin Sena, George Ross & Loring Ross discourage anyone from attending if they can’t sign up early (or forget) and we will always do our best to accommodate any last-minute sign-ups. Additionally, we should not get too upset with the club for wanting to know the number in advance because they also have a job to do to prepare. Our guest speaker for the September meeting is Maj Stan Komitov. Major Komitov is the Course Director for the Contemporary Irregular Warfare Course (CIWC) at United States Air Force Special Operations School, Hurlburt Field, Florida. Most recently, he returned from a tour to CENTCOM, where he was the Duty for Analysis, Correlation, and Fusion Frank and Glo Roberts Cell at 609 Combined Air Operations Center, Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Maj Komitov has shared his knowledge on the subject of irregular warfare for the past four years with students from across DoD and partner nations. He arrived to USAFSOS from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, CA where pursed Master’s of Science in Defense Analysis. At the NPS he studied insurgency and counterinsurgency theories and approaches. Maj Komitov is also an American Military University graduate with a Master’s of Arts in Strategic Intelligence. Prior to his time at NPS, Maj Komitov was the Intelligence Flight Chief in support of B-52 operations at Barksdale, LA. His topic will be “Defining Irregular Warfare” Hope to see you all there. Please sign up early.

New Member Profile

Robert “Bob” Rasmussen

Robert (“Bob”) Rasmussen is originally from the rural community of Denmark, Kansas, where the majority of residents have a last name ending in “sen.” I graduated from high school in Lincoln, KS, and started flying while a college student, working at the airport in Hays, KS. I graduated from “Single Engine Jet” Pilot Training at Greenville AFB, MS in Class 58B. I selected

F-86F/F-100A for advanced training, and then selected the Phillippines for my first assignment. After Clark AB and George AFB, I was assigned to Luke AFB for the first of two tours as an instructor pilot. All of the aircraft I flew during my 30 year career were fighters, with two exceptions: the T-39 Saber Liner for three years while a staff officer at HQ TAC, and the O-1 Bird Dog while a forward air controller with the 1st Infantry Division in III Corps Vietnam. The Air Force hit Luke and Nellis in Dec 65, for 30 instructor pilots from F-100s and the F-105 to go to the 1st Infantry Div. and the 1st Air Cavalry Div., 15 to each. I was assigned as the Division FAC at Big Red One Headquarters. After six months, I was reassigned to 7th AF as a strike planner in Tiger Hound/Tally HO. In my second tour at Luke I was a dual-qualified IP in the F-100 and the F-5, flying the latter at Willy. After the Armed Forces Staff College, I had my first tour at HQ TAC. My next assignment was to the F-4E at Udorn RTAB, and then to the 33rd at Eglin AFB, where I was the Ops Officer of the 58th TFS and then Commander of the 59th TFS. I joined the Order of Daedalians while at the Air War College in 1978, and became a Life Member after my staff tour at the Pentagon. As the Division Chief of Europe/NATO in Plans and Policy in the Air Staff I traveled often to NATO HQ in Brussels. I was next the Wing Vice Commander at Nellis when we converted from the F-4 to the F-16. In 1981 I accepted an assignment to USEUCOM HQ in Stuttgart Germany. At the time I owned two old Porsches, both acquired while at the Pentagon, and both of which I had restored. I sold the 1965 356C to my next door neighbor, and took the 1965 911 from Las Vegas to Stuttgart. While I lived at Patch Barracks, as the Chief of Plans at EUCOM, I had the 911 maintained by the factory. One day in August 1983, I had a call from the Porsche Press Dept. asking me if they could use my car as a press car. I said I guess so, but why? She said they were getting ready for the Frankfurt Auto Show “next month” when they realized it was going to be the 20th anniversary of the showing of the first 911 at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1963, and they did not have an example of that (Cont. on page 4)

car. So the factory borrowed my 911 to help them celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the 911. A year later the factory acquired the car from me, before I returned to the States, and they still use it today to represent the beginning of the 911 series. My next assignment was back to HQ TAC, and then I retired out of Langley in 1986, and we moved back to Niceville where we had bought a lot and built a house while stationed at Eglin. My second career was 14 years in real estate appraisal, primarily commercial properties between Pensacola and Panama City. My wife of over 48 years, Beverly, died of cancer in 2007. Our son, Robert, lives in Las Vegas, where he is an environmental scientist for Nevada Energy. Our daughter, Kay, lives in Shalimar, and is the Associate Director of the Economic Development Council of Okaloosa County. My hobbies through the years included hunting and fishing. I tried golf, but it interfered with the hunting and fishing. Now fully retired, I have sold my boat and taken up skeet and trap for recreation, and renewed my membership in the local Daedalians’ Flight. Send your BIOs and your “War Stories and Flying Tales” to me at [email protected], or mail them to me at: 628 Mooney Rd., Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547.
