65 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide Barriers to accessing education for refugees include: international student fees, interruptions in previous education, lack of documentation, language barriers, and difficulties in applications and testing processes, among others Higher education provides refugees with the skills, knowledge, and community to build a better life for themselves and for their families WUSC’s Student Refugee Program (SRP) is one solution. It is unique in the world because: ○ It combines resettlement with post-secondary education ○ It engages youth in a peer-to-peer refugee integration model The SRP operates in Kenya, Malawi, Jordan, and Lebanon The SRP gives Canadian students a chance to learn about global issues such as forced migration and develop valuable cross-cultural and leadership skills as they support newcomer students on their campus
