~ 2 ~ Q: For what reasons has the tournament been named for Coach Fred Dunlap? A: The lessons learned in a winning sports program can serve as the great equalizer in the unbalanced game of life. Coach D worked tirelessly to fulfill this aspect of Colgate’s mission by ensuring that our collegiate learning experience was not exclusively academic. By placing his players in a position to overachieve by scheduling teams with far greater resources to take the field against us, Coach D can be credited with preparing us for life by challenging us to find a way to win. Q: Why does Colgate University need me to attend the Fred Dunlap Golf Classic? A: The challenge of recruiting top‐notch student‐athletes remains the greatest expense to the Colgate athletics programs. Each year, Colgate football and basketball recruiting needs exceed their budget allocations by $100,000 and $50,000, respectively. In order to recover the financial difference, and preserve the reputation, competitiveness and integrity of the athletics programs, alumni support remains vital. A successful tournament will not only help Colgate sustain its winning tradition, but also help maintain your friends’ identities as former student‐athletes. Q: For what are we playing? A: A chance at Immortality – take it. The winning team will be awarded by having their name engraved on the Gripper Cup. Playing with enough gold plated hardware strapped to his resilient figure to be known as the King of Bling, the Gripper (Frank Speno, Sr.) continually expresses his unconditional love for Colgate through active and meaningful contributions to campus life. Renown for his ethics, enthusiasm and grinding ability to shoot 38 on a side or 81 in a round, Gripper personifies the spirit of Colgate. Q: What is the Schedule of Events? A: We will convene Friday, August 17, at 8 p.m. at the Seven Oaks Clubhouse for warm‐up libations and appetizers. The Welcome Barbeque featuring She Crab will commence at 8:30 p.m. on the Clubhouse grounds. The Calcutta Player Auction will begin promptly at 9:30 p.m. To optimize the banter and camaraderie, we will be starting tee times at the Classic beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 18. Because players typically circle the links again Saturday afternoon, additional Saturday tee times must be scheduled on your own through Marian Blain, Colgate’s Golf Pro, at 315.824.1432. The dinner and award ceremony will begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Q: Do I need a legitimate handicap? A: Yes. Notwithstanding the irony that golf is a challenging game even though you are only asked to use an oversized Titanium club strike a little white ball that is not moving, we cannot risk a victory by a serial exaggerator and reserve the right to make handicap adjustments for those players only using handicap estimates. Sandbaggers and imposters alike will be treated with all the disaffection of an unwanted prom date. Because of the positive correlation between lower handicaps and success in life, the maximum handicap that will be given is 30. Because some of the invitees now have had a decade to get their game certified for public auction, our golf titans are prepared to demonstrate the Classic has a most discerning yet all‐inclusive invitation list. If you are the proud owner of a 30 handicap, we welcome you, thank you for your money, and hope that you are good at accepting tough love.

White Eagle Lodge may also have rooms available, please contact them at 800.295.9322 .
