Student Athlete Category Morgan Cadwell Cugell ’06 This explosive scorer built an astounding roster of honors and led Skidmore Women’s Soccer to a new level of competitive play. Chosen Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Year as a freshman, she was twice named a UCAA Second Team All-Star (2002, 2003). A two-time Liberty League First Team All-Star (2004, 2005), Cugell was named team co-MVP in 2004 and MVP in 2005. She was selected for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All -Northeast Region Third Team in 2004 and joined the NSCAA All-New York Region Second Team in 2005. As a junior, she led the Thoroughbreds to their best season in over a decade with a 13-6-1 record. The team also earned its first Liberty League playoff appearance, with Cugell ranking among the top scorers in the National Collegiate Athletic Association with 18 goals and four assists for 40 points. A prolific scorer, she had a hand in 22 of the team’s 34 goals. Cugell led the team in scoring all four years, finishing her senior year with 14 goals and eight assists for 32 points. She graduated as Skidmore’s all-time leading scorer with 54 goals and 22 assists for 130 points, a record that still stands in 2014. She also holds the program record for career goals (54) and shares the record for goals in a game (4), and assists in a season (9).

Rob Hutchison ’07 An outstanding two-sport athlete, Rob Hutchison ’07 distinguished himself as a leader whose contributions to Skidmore Men’s Hockey and Baseball are legendary. A talented baseball player, Hutchison was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic (2005-2007) and a Liberty League First Team All-Star (2007). That year, he was named team captain, earning the Skidmore College Athletics Leadership Award. He led Skidmore to two league championships as well as the program’s first two NCAA Division III tournaments (2005, 2007). The 2005 team finished third in the NCAA regional, the Thoroughbred’s best national finish. Hutchison tied a 20-year-old NCAA Division III record for stolen bases in a game (7) in a 2007 win at Vassar. He completed his senior season near the top in several program career offensive categories, including games played (second, 147), runs (second, 116), hits (seventh, 130), and stolen bases (second, 95). An equally powerful ice hockey player, Hutchison led the team in scoring his sophomore and senior year, when he racked up 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points. He was named assistant captain in 2006, returning as captain in 2007. That year, he guided the men to a 16-8-2 overall record and national ranking. A three-time Eastern College Athletic Conference East All-Academic (2005 -2007), he was named an ECAC East Honorable Mention All-Star in 2007. Hutchison concluded his career with a team-record 102 games played and 44 goals and 53 assists for 97 points, placing him 12th on the program’s alltime scoring list. According to hockey coach Neil Sinclair, Hutchison’s “quiet leadership on and off the ice set the tone for the 4
team’s success his senior year. His teammates could count on him to make a play when it was most needed.” Baseball coach Ron Plourde reflects, “Rob was as tough as they come. He was gifted with quick hands and tremendous speed; he was a real gamer. He never took a day off on the ball field and could always be counted on. I would take a whole team of Rob Hutchisons.”
Matt Major ’97 One of the most exceptional players in the history of Skidmore Men’s Golf, Matt Major ’97 was a natural team leader who quietly dominated the course during his college career, elevating himself and the program to new levels of excellence. A four-time selection to the National Collegiate Athletic Association All-District Team, Major played in all 42 collegiate tournaments held during his time at Skidmore. These include four NCAA championships and four Eastern College Athletic Conference finals. His remarkable skills helped the Thoroughbreds finish second in the nation in Division III in 1996. Major captured first-place honors in four collegiate tournaments; the Middlebury, Palamountain, and Hartwick Invitationals and the Skidmore Fall Classic. He finished in the top ten 26 times. A two-time NCAA All-American (1996, 1997), he was named team captain and Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1997. Major was a member of two Skidmore Hall of Fame teams (1994, 1996). Former Skidmore golf coach and athletic director Tim Brown recalls Major as “a quality student athlete who 5
was respected by his peers at Skidmore and around the country by other coaches and players. Skidmore Men’s Golf is better for having Matt Major as a part of its history.”
Hallory Mogren ’04 One of Women’s Field Hockey’s most exceptional players, Hallory Mogren ’04 led the team as it achieved new heights competing on the national stage. A two-time National Collegiate Athletic Association AllAmerican (2001, 2003), Mogren was named an NCAA All-Region, an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association All-Star, and a UCAA All-Academic for three consecutive years (2001, 2002, 2003). As a sophomore, Mogren helped the team advance to the NCAA semifinals for the first time in program history. Her junior year saw the team post a perfect 7-0 league record on the way to an NCAA quarterfinal run. As a senior, Mogren led the women to a 17-4 record, a second straight UCAA championship, and a third straight NCAA quarterfinal appearance. She finished the season third on Skidmore’s all-time scoring list with 49 goals and sixth in points with 113. During Mogren’s career, the Thoroughbreds enjoyed a 63-14 overall and 24-4 league record with two Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association championships and three NCAA Division III tournament appearances. In 2012, she was inducted into the Friends of Skidmore Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 2001 team. 6
Coach Beth Hallenbeck reflects, “Hallory’s combination of high-level skills, power, and finesse made her an outstanding midfielder. Her calm demeanor belied the competitive spirit within.”
Darryl Manzer ’07 Darryl Manzer’s astounding record of achievements, several of them firsts in the history of Skidmore Volleyball, catapulted this spirited and hardworking team leader onto the national stage. The first Skidmore Volleyball player to be named an All-American all four years of her college career, she was also the first recipient of the College’s Inspiration Award in 2007. Three-time team MVP (2004-06), she captained the Thoroughbreds her sophomore, junior, and senior years. She was selected Skidmore Senior Athlete of the Year in 2007. Liberty League Conference Rookie of the Year (2003), she was a three-time Conference Performer of the Year (200406) and a three-time Conference All-Academic (2004-06). Twice named a New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year (2005-06), Manzer was selected as an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-New York Region player four times (2003-2006). Honored as AVCA National Player of the Week in 2004, she captured AVCA Second Team AllAmerican honors in 2006, when she also made ESPN magazine’s Academic All-District First-Team. In 2007, the National Collegiate Athletic Association ranked her nationally at #7 in kills and #22 in career hitting percentage. Manzer still holds Skidmore Volleyball’s career records for kills, kills/set, hitting percentage, blocks, points, and points/set. 7
Special Recognition Category Mary Hobart Petke ’70 A talented high school student athlete, Mary “Mimi” Hobart Petke ’70 arrived on Skidmore’s Union Avenue campus in 1965 to pursue a degree in history with hopes of competing in sports. In an era before Title IX and intercollegiate conference affiliation, Petke played on the basketball, tennis, and ski teams for the sheer love of sport, distinguishing herself in competitive play against teams from area colleges. She excelled in singles and doubles tennis, played basketball on the then new 4 on 4 half-court system, and captained the ski team in her senior year. Despite having to train at less than Spartan rope tow facilities, Petke captured the Skimeister Award for best combined times in slalom, giant slalom, and crosscountry events at the University of New Hampshire meet. She went on to raise a family, but kept competitive in women’s club golf and tennis. More than 30 years after graduating from Skidmore and thanks to a little known provision in California education law, she was recruited to play golf at Saddleback Community College, where she captained the woman’s team to a first-place league finish and regional tournament play. Petke also cofounded the Women’s Southern California Golf Association Rules Education Committee, now in its 17th year. An on-course rules official for women’s collegiate golf tournaments, she is gratified to witness the significantly more equal opportunity available to today’s female scholarathletes. 8
Team Category 1989 Women’s Polo Team This legendary team embarked on an extraordinary journey that would redefine Women’s Polo, and elevate the Thoroughbreds to National Champions—the first Skidmore team in any sport ever to earn that honor. Just a year after barely escaping reclassification as a club sport and coached by new graduate Holly Holleran ’88, this determined team faced down a string of formidable regional and national competitors in United States Polo Association tournament play. The women captured the Eastern Regional Polo Championships, besting host team and favorite Cornell. In Ft. Worth, Texas, the Thoroughbreds won their first-round game against Tulane by the widest margin ever at Nationals, 27-6. In the second round, Skidmore toppled top rival Yale 17-14, advancing to the Championship Match. In a dramatic 19-13 victory over Colorado State, dubbed by tournament officials as “the slaughter of Colorado,” the Thoroughbreds claimed the USPA National Title. They would go on to capture the Reserve National Champion Title in 1990. Loring Piper ’90 Rose Lansbury ’90
