Looking Good
{THE HEALTH ISSUE}
FROM THE RUNWAY THE PASTEL LEOPARD
Take a cue from DKNY: leopard print is all the rage, especially when it’s pink. The brand’s adorable skirt-and-sweatshirt combination inspires this look worn by Fitz Koehler, fitness expert and president of Fitzness International, headquartered in Gainesville. The Nike light pink leopard-printed capris (Dillard’s, $60) are vibrant, fun and, most importantly, durable. A fuchsia tank top from the same brand (Dillard’s, $32) and Nike Free TR Fit 3 sneakers (Dillard’s, $95) complete the look. Pushing her boundaries in the bold color and print, Fitz looks confident and on-trend.

EDGY ATTIRE
While punk is a cool, fearless trend that appears in collections such as Versace, Saint Laurent, Rodarte and Givenchy, most of us aren’t ready to break out the vinyl, chains and studs. Instead, incorporate small aspects of the look into your workout wear with this neon graphic top from Champion (Target, $16.99). Jacqueline Valdez, a certified fitness instructor and owner of Elegant Body Pilates, also sports a Champion mesh skort (Target, $18.99) over graphic leggings of the same brand (Target, $19.99) à la Avril Lavigne, finished with gray and neon Nike Free 3.0 sneakers (Sports Authority, $110). Edgy but not over-thetop, this punk-inspired look is meant for anything from running to flipping on rings.
OMETIMES finding the motivation to work out seems to be tougher than the workout itself. Just visualizing the effort makes us want to curl up with a bowl of ice cream and watch the “The Biggest Loser” contestants sweat it out instead. As much as we want to look and feel our best, it can be difficult to push ourselves to the point of discomfort that creates change. The surprising fix: a shopping trip.
Just as buying a new dress may initiate a night out, investing in new workout wear may motivate you to hit the gym more often. You might actually get excited about going for a run when sporting attractive, well-fitting and sweat-wicking garb as opposed to an oversized, cotton T-shirt and a pair of sweatpants. Something as simple as donning sleek, graphic leggings just may have the power to boost your confidence and make you work harder, ultimately improving your workout. These runway-inspired looks take cues from the most notable fall 2013 trends. With Tioga’s high-tech Gainesville Health and Fitness Center as a backdrop, we’ve proven that workout-conducive clothes can in fact be high fashion. With a striking look, you just might find the motivation to huff, puff and sweat your way to a stronger, healthier you. GAINESVILLE MAGAZINE | OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2013

SHINING BRIGHT
Sunspots are neither good for the environment nor our faces, but the prints are beautiful on fabric. Flashes of sunlight create stunning textiles in the collections of Cushine Et Ochs, Creatures of Comfort and Rachel Comey. Following this galactic trend, Fitz moves easily in Nike azure sunspot-printed running shorts (Dillard’s, $32) with a neon green trim. The look is made even sportier with a neon green tank top of the same brand (Dillard’s, $32) and ASICS GEL-Cumulus 15 sneakers (Dillard’s, $115).

SUITED UP
As evidenced on the runway, the black-tie-approved dress has taken a step back to make room for a crop of luxurious tuxedos from names such as Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang, Ralph Lauren and Helmut Lang. Modeled by Janelle Lavoie, Gainesville Health and Fitness personal trainer, we’ve created our own tux-inspired workout outfit with Puma tuxedo-striped capris (Sports Authority, $50) and a fitted turquoise Puma jacket (Sports Authority, $50). A turquoise-striped Under Armor tank top (Sports Authority, $35) completes the look. Lavoie’s sleek and sophisticated attire has her ready for any workout.

EMERALD CITY
The Pantone Color Institute chose emerald as its top color for 2013, so it comes as no surprise that shades of radiant, lush green were spotted all over the fall season’s runways, including at Reed Krakoff, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Calvin Klein. Green looks great on nearly every skin tone. Jacqueline Valdez models a peacock green Champion Fit and Flare top (Target, $18.99) that she says easily could be worn at any yoga or Pilates class. The bold color pops when paired with Champion spandex black capris (Target, $24.99) and layered over a violet chevron Champion sports bra (Target, $8.48 - $16.99).
