Drift Portsmouth Premier League WHAT IS PPL? The Drift Portsmouth Premier League (PPL) is an indoor cricket league played by the members of the University of Portsmouth Cricket Club. The league is played between the months of January and March, allowing competitive cricket to be played during the winter. The league follows the basic BUCS indoor rules, and incorporates players from all UPCC teams. Games will once again take place from Monday to Friday, either late afternoon or in the evening, and continually attract large crowds.

FORMAT PPL 2 involved seven sides, with every team playing each other before the top four entered the semi finals. PPL 3 sees some changes however, after finishing bottom last year the Guildhall Renegades have been disbanded. Langstone Lightning have been elected to take their place, and due to the success of the PPL 2 the Somerstown Sixers have also been elected to the league meaning it is now an eight team tournament. The format remains exactly the same, with the top four in the league entering the semi final stage. For more information see: www.upcc.teamapp.com

PPL 2 2015 saw the return of PPL 2 after financial issues had postponed the tournament in 2014. Cosham Crusaders proved to be the in form team during the group stage, winning six games comfortably and finishing top. Spinnaker Spartans started the season quickly, before stuttering mid season. Their early form however was enough to see them finish second and qualify. The rest of the league was wide open for much of the season; Fratton Rams were inconsistent thorughout their campaign but managed to finish third with a final day victory. Southsea Superkings started poorly and looked almost out of the competition, before three wins on the bounce dragged them back into contention and they eventually finished fourth. Hilsea Hawks started the season with a convncing win, but never found form and finished fifth. The much fancied Gunwharf Raiders also struggled as players failed to adapt to indoor rules and never looked like making the playoffs, finishing sixth. The now defunct Guildhall Renegades took home the wooden spoon, winning just one game in a poor campaign. The semi finals saw a huge upset as the previously unbeaten Crusaders were beaten by a superb Superkings performance. The other semi final was a close affair, with the Spartans beating the Rams in the final over. The PPL 2 final saw the Superkings set a competitive total but the Spartans had enough to get over the line and were crowned PPL 2 Champions.

Last year’s table toppers Cosham will be hoping to go one better and win the PPL this season. Matty Blowers returns as captain, while big things are expected from draft pick Tom Phillippe. Josh Parsonage and new boy Dan Carter spearhead the Crusaders attack, in a side that contains a tournament high 5 debutants. Will Pyle, Paul Jarmain and Louis Turner will all contribute with both bat and ball after being signed for good money. Alex Morgan is the fifth and final debutant, he’ll bat at the top of the order with Phillippe.

Last year’s semi-finalists return for PPL 3 under the new leadership of Ex - Spartan Jake Turner. All Rounder Jack Maciver returns after missing a year through injury, and with both Jamie White and Elliott Evans drafted the Rams top four look strong. Seamers Alex Lord and Arjun Amin will need to bowl tightly whilst off spinner Phil Dunn will surely benefit from the change in ball this year. Fan favourite Jack Thompson completes the Rams squad and is sure to contribute throughout the tournament.

Regan Derham steps up to lead the Raiders in PPL 3, with the club hoping for a better performance than last season. Sanjit Sandhu will need to compliment his runs with some tight bowling, whilst Sam Gale is a solid top order batsmen. Paddy Edrich and George Savoury return for their second seasons at the club, with three PPL debutants rounding of the squad. Kurt Richardson will prove useful with both bat and ball, while Dan Fussell and Angus Stupple will look to contribute wickets to a more successful Raiders season.

The reigning champions return looking to retain their title in PPL 3. Wicket keeper Matthew Storey takes over the captaincy from fast bowler Matt Blandford who is also retained, with former Raiders leg spinner Luke Bellars being named vice captain. Batsmen Ellis Strand and Medium pacer Jay Jani have moved from the Superkings and Hawks respectively, in a side that contains three PPL debutants. All Rounders Mabs Alam and Jordan Bowen, along with batsmen Olly Dixon complete the Spartans squad.

A new franchise for PPL 3, Eli Clarkson will captain the side in their debut season. Ex-Crusaders Mark Johnson, and Josh Woodfield will be expected to contribute with bat and ball alongside former Hawk Raz Havell. Batsmen Adam Krise and Scott Wildman move across from the Renegades and ex Hawks skipper Ieaun Morgans also makes the move. All three will be looking to improve on their PPL 2 performances. Big hitting batsmen Mark Eteen is the only debutant in the Lightning squad, the most exciting rookie in this seasons PPL.

PPL 1 franchise Somerstown Sixers return for PPL 3 under the leadership of former Ram Nick Johnson. With the returning Yashan Akila and ex-Renegade James Sudderns at the top of the order as well as Johnson, the Sixers are sure to put some big totals on the board. Adam Smith bowled superbly for the Spartans in last year’s tournament, and he’ll be joined by debutants Jermain Franklyn, Max Heise, Danny Tomlinson and Suarabh Jadhav in the bowling department.

Ex Guildhall Renegade Greg Bowen takes control of last years runners up for PPL 3. In a new look Superkings side only Marcus Campo has been retained. Tom Gentle returns after missing a season and alongside ex-Hawk Adam Neill will provide experience with the bat. Former Crusader Harrish Maheethan was the most expensive player in the PPL 2 draft while David Binks was part of the Spartans squad that won PPL 2. Debutant Mac Cox is expected to shine with bat and ball, but little is known of inexperienced batsmen James Staton.

Venues Spinnaker Sports Centre - Spinnaker Sports Centre is the flagship venue for the Portsmouth Premier League. With flat walls and a flat ceiling, the bounce is consistent throughout. A ground level viewing area means the crowd are on top of the action, creating a brilliant atmosphere. St Pauls -

St Pauls is a tough place to field for any PPL cricketer. With uneven walls as well as an overhang on the off side, the ball can bounce in any direction. A high ceiling means the back wall is more accessible, and lighting is considerably better than Spinnaker.

Charter - Charter Sports Centre is a new addition for PPL 3. With a much lower ceiling than either Spinnaker or St Pauls, it may well favour the bowler. Unfortunately no crowds can watch at Charter, meaning there could be a potentially flatter atmosphere

Sponsors

Brilens are a Portsmouth based clothing company who once again provide the playing shirts for this year’s PPL. All eight PPL badges have been superbly designed by the company who are well known throughout Hampshire. PPL Chairman Jack Maciver said “Brilens have once again upped the ante with the shirts this year. Their new logo combined with the change in material have left players delighted with their new tops. They really are the best in the business when it comes to this”

Drift Bar are a new sponsor for the PPL this year, with their logo emblazoned across the front of each teams shits. Located on Palmerston Road, Southsea, Drift is one of the busiest places in Portsmouth on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as offering affordable food throughout the week. Drift was the host for the PPL Draft announcement where the new franchises and players were unveiled. Drift will host the PPL Presentation evening at the end of the season as well, an event all players and fans can look forward too.
