During the last ten seasons, under the direction of head coach Chris Carideo, the men’s basketball team at Widener has compiled a record of 146-117, won three Commonwealth Conference Championships, appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times, with 14 All-Conference Selections, two Player of the Year, two All-Americans, one Academic All-American and one Rookie of the Year. Coach Carideo’s overall coaching record at the college level is 232-169 (.578) The team has traveled to many different areas of the country for games such as: Los Angeles (CA), Greensboro (NC), Boston (MA), Washington (DC), Hamilton (NY) and many other locations. In most recent seasons, Sardayah Sambo ’17 was named 2nd team all Commonwealth Conference, Greg Lawson ‘15 was named Honorable Mention all-conference for two consecutive seasons (2013-14, 2014-15) and Perry Wright ‘12 was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and achieved third team All-American status. His teammate Jack Brennan ’12 also was named second Team allconference for the second consecutive year. Jack also surpassed the 1,000 point plateau during his senior season. The upcoming 2016-2017 season is one to look forward to. The team returns 12 letter winners from last year’s squad which missed conference playoffs by one game and has added some exciting and talented players through recruiting. The team will be competing in a tournament at Johns Hopkins University from January 2nd through the 3rd as well as hosting its annual Tip-Off Tournament for Autism Awareness in November. The team looks to win its fourth conference crown in the last eleven seasons under Coach Carideo, which would help it return to the NCAA Tournament for the 18th time in school history and first time since 2009.
In the last thirteen seasons, under the direction of head coach Alisa Kintner, the women’s basketball team has compiled a record of 201-145, won two Commonwealth Conference Championships, appeared in the NCAA tournament three times, and made it to the Elite Eight in 2013. The program has produced thirteen All-Conference Players, two Players of the Year, two All-Americans, and one Academic All-American.
