BUTLER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2017-18 Season JENNINGS SHINES IN HER BUTLER DEBUT

Whitney Jennings led Butler to victory in the 2017-18 season opener by scoring a gamehigh 30 points in her BU debut. Jennings became the first Bulldog to score 30-plus points since the 2015 season when Blaire Langlois notched 32 points in a road win at Georgetown. Langlois hit a school record nine 3-point field goals in that contest. Jennings knocked down four shots from distance on her way to dropping 30 points against Austin Peay. She made 11 total field goals and added a team-high four assists, to go along with three rebounds and two steals.

BIG 3 BATTLE

Whitney Jennings, Tori Schickel and Michelle Weaver combined for 55 of Butler’s 75 points on Saturday night. In similar fashion, Murray State had three players combine for 76 points in their setback at Evansville. Ke’Shunan James scored 30 in the season opener while Bria Bethea was close behind with 28 points. Abria Gulledge added 18 for the Racers.

STRONG START

Butler scored 75 points in the win over Austin Peay while limiting the Governors to just 54. This type of performance only happened once during the entire 2016-17 campaign. Butler notched a 21-point win at home over Seton Hall 79-58. It was the only time BU scored over 75 points that season.

Butler returns nine letterwinners from last year’s team including four of five starters. That group will mesh with Whitney Jennings and Iman Lathan who will each be eligible for competition in 2017-18. Jennings joined the team last year after transferring from Iowa and Lathan is a fifth-year graduate student that will join the Bulldogs after spending the last two seasons at Cal State Fullerton. Naira Caceres (Maine), Katherine Strong (VCU), and Ashanti Thomas (Penn State) will all sit out due to the NCAA transfer rule.

The Butler women’s basketball team was picked to finish eighth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll. After a vote from the league’s head coaches, the Bulldogs accumulated 29 points placing them ahead of Providence (18) and Xavier (10). The top of the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll included Marquette, DePaul and Villanova. The Golden Eagles collected nine of the 10 first place votes to amass 81 points. The final first-place vote went to the Blue Demons who came in second with 73 points. Villanova (61) held off Creighton (58) for third place in the poll. The middle of the pack included Georgetown (43), Seton Hall (40) and St. John’s (37).

REBOUND RECORD BELONGS TO SCHICKEL

Tori Schickel pulled down 364 rebounds a year ago to break the Butler single-season school record. She led Butler in rebounding in all 31 games, pulling down 125 on the offensive glass and 239 on defense. Schickel grabbed 10 rebounds or more in 19 games during the 2016-17 season. Her season-high of 20 rebounds was recorded twice, once at Xavier (1/8) and the next time at home against Villanova (1/20).

BUTLER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2017-18 Season SCOUTING MURRAY STATE

The Racers lost at Evansville in their season opener 89-81. The Purple Aces jumped out to a 31-14 lead after the first quarter and would enjoy an 18-point lead at the half. Murray State would fight back in the second half behind strong performances by Ke’Shunan James and Bria Bethea, but the early deficit was simply too much to overcome. James and Bethea combined for 58 points and 23 rebounds. Teammate Abria Gulledge would chip in with 18 points and five boards. The rest of the team only managed to score five points.

SCOUTING LIPSCOMB

Lipscomb played two games over opening weekend, earning one win and taking one loss. The Lady Bison will play their first four games of the regular season on the road. They lost 85-69 at the College of Charleston on Friday night, but recovered with a 58-54 win at Charleston Southern. The Lady Bison will play a game at Ball State on Wednesday before traveling to Indianapolis to face the Bulldogs on Friday. Loren Cagle has been terrific over the first two games of the season. She is currently leading the team in scoring at 18 points per game and doubles as Lipscomb’s top rebounder (6.5). The 5-5 senior is shooting 51 percent from the field and is also the team leader in assists (5.5).

DEFEND THE ARC

Butler shot 40 percent from 3-point range in the win over Austin Peay by making four of their 10 attempts. Jennings was responsible for all four makes. The opposition however has fallen in love with the 3-point shot early in the season. Murray State took 29 3-point field goals in the opener, making eight to end the game shooting 27 percent from distance. Lipscomb has shot 62 shots over their first two games of the season. They are shooting 25 percent from 3-point range by connecting on 16 from behind the arc.

BRING IT BACK

Butler will bring back nine of the ten players on the 2016-17 roster. Nine returning letterwinners allows Butler to bring back 95 percent of their scoring. As far as just playing time, 87 percent of the minutes played last season were from student-athletes who are still on the roster this season. The return of Tori Schickel helps BU return 93 percent of its rebounding from 2016-17 and with sharpshooters Sydney Buck and Sydney Shelton both returning, Butler will bring back nearly 96 percent of their made threes from the 2016-17 season. Buck and Shelton accounted for 91 of Butler’s 156 made 3-point field goals (58%).

Butler Bulldog Women’s Basketball Kurt Godlevske Head Coach, Butler University Kurt Godlevske will enter his fourth season as the head coach of the Butler women’s basketball program in 2017-18. The Bulldogs ended the 2016-17 season with a 6-25 overall record, but reached the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals by defeating Xavier 68-66 in the first round. The victory marked the second-straight season in which Butler eliminated Xavier from postseason play as BU highlighted the 2015-16 season by recording the program’s first-ever BIG EAST Tournament win as the #9 seed Bulldogs defeated #8 seed Xavier 48-47 in the first round. The Bulldogs had a young roster in 2015-16 (six freshmen) that lacked depth with only 10 active student-athletes. The team played a tough non-conference schedule to prepare for the BIG EAST Conference season and fared well by picking up wins against teams from the ACC, American Athletic Conference, Big 12, and the SEC. In his first season, Godlevske guided the Bulldogs to a 14-16 overall record that included a 10-8 conference record in the BIG EAST. 14 total wins during the 2014-15 season was significant for the coaching staff as it set a new school record for most wins recorded by a first-year head coach in Butler women’s basketball history. Godlevske was able to motivate his inexperienced group that featured seven newcomers and not a single returning starter. The 2014-15 team joined elite company by posting a perfect 8-0 record during the month of January. BU had not gone undefeated during a full month of the regular season in the past 17 years. Victories during the winningstreak came against Providence (2x), Creighton, St. John’s, Marquette, Villanova, Georgetown, and Xavier. Godlevske originally joined Butler as an assistant coach (2013). After one full season as an assistant, Godlevske was tagged as the interim head coach, but that title would change on May 6 when Vice President and Director of Athletics Barry Collier named Godlevske the permanent head coach of the Bulldogs. Prior to coaching at Butler, Godlevske spent seven years as girls’ head coach at Bedford North Lawrence High School. He guided the Lady Stars to a 120-41 record, including a perfect 28-0 mark and the IHSAA Class 4A Girls’ Basketball State Championship in 2013. An all-state high school player in L’Anse, Mich., Godlevske played basketball at Northern Michigan University, and then started his collegiate coaching career at NCAA Division II Lake Superior State University, where he posted a 35-19 record in two years. After a few years out of coaching, he returned as head coach of his alma mater in L’Anse, leading the school to a 40-9 record in two seasons before taking over at Bedford North Lawrence. Godlevske earned his degree in physical education and health from Northern Michigan University (1994). He earned a master’s degree from the University of Indianapolis (2004) and a principal’s license from Oakland City (2008). Kurt and his wife Beth are the proud parents of three children, Corrin, Noah and Katie.

A Quote from Coach G: “We recruited Alisha for her overall ability. She is a special shooter that has range and shoots a high percentange from behind the arc. With her height we are able to play her on the wing or as a pick-and-pop four. She has some things to work on at this level, but she gets better every day.” High School: Four-year starter at Thornton Academy High School... In total, Aube scored 1,246 points in just 74 games... 2017 Maine McDonald’s All-Star Team participant... Four-time all-conference selection... Named Portland Press Herald All-State as a junior and senior... Two-time team captain... 2015 conference scoring champion ( 18 ppg)... Scored a career-high 31 points vs. Biddeford... Pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds vs. Scarborough... Dished out a career-high seven assists against Mt. Ararat... Member of the National Honor Society... Named to the 2017 Basketball SMAA Conference All-Academic Team. Personal: Daughter of Joe and Heidi Aube... Has a brother named Ethan.

A Quote from Coach G: “Naira is a position-less player for us in a very positive way. Teams will have to pick their poison on how they want to defend her. A Quote from Coach G: “Katherine is a super-tough, athletic, grind-it-out player that came to Butler from VCU. She’s a Bulldog with the basketball and extremely difficult to defend. Once her perimeter game comes along she will be a very good player in this league.” 2016-17 Sophomore Season: Saw playing time in 30 of 31 games… Averaged 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game… Averaged 12.8 minutes of playing time… Shot 43 percent from the field (49-112)… Hit two 3-point field goals… Shot 46 percent from the free throw line (14-30)… Collected more offensive rebounds (45) than defensive (42)… Logged 12 assists… Came up with eight steals… Blocked two shots… Scored a season-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting at Saint Joseph’s (Jan. 11)… Reached double figures with 10 points at Furman (Dec. 7)… Pulled down a season-high seven rebounds in four different contests. 2015-16 Freshman Season: Appeared in 26 games… Averaged 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game… Averaged 7.2 minutes of playing time… Shot 29 percent from the field (19-64)… Hit nine 3-point field goals… Shot 47 percent from the free throw line (9-19)… Pulled down 39 total rebounds… Logged seven assists and seven steals… Blocked three shots… Best outing came against Coppin St. in the opening game of the season (11/13) where she scored eight points and grabbed two rebounds in 18 minutes… Registered eight points against Maryland Eastern Shore (12/13) connecting on 2-3 3-pointers in the contest. High School: Earned Southland All-Conference and All-Area honors her first two seasons at Bloom High School… Sat out her junior season with an ACL injury… Highly touted recruit split her AAU basketball time between the Illinois Wolverines and Mac Irvin Godfather, two of the most highly competitive AAU teams in the Chicago area.
