MATCH #2 ALABAMA vs. JACKSONVILLE ST. August 31, 2008

• UA Soccer Complex • 7:00 p.m.

Women’s Soccer to Open Home Slate The Alabama women’s soccer team (0-0-1) returns to Tuscaloosa to open its regular season home schedule. The Crimson Tide will face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (0-1-1) on Sunday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. CST at the UA Soccer Complex. Alabama is coming off a 1-1 double overtime draw against defending conference USA champion Memphis.

Who to Watch In just her second season in the collegiate ranks sophomore forward Victoria Frederick has shown she is a force up front for the Crimson Tide. It took just 16 minutes for the Huntsville, Ala. native to get on the score sheet in 2008. In the exhibition match against Jackson State Frederick had her hand in four of the five goals in that contest. Frederick tallied a hat-trick and handed out an assist.

NOVEMBER 5 SEC Tournament 14 NCAA Tournament

The Crimson Tide opened its 2008 season and the Todd Bramble era with an impressive double overtime 1-1 draw on the road against reigning conference USA and NCAA Tournament participant Memphis. Sophomore forward Victoria Frederick continues to find the back of the net as she got Alabama on the board in the 16th minute off an assist from freshman midfielder Shannon Lathrop. Junior goalkeeper Kara Gudmens went the distance in between the pipes and allowed one goal and made eight saves.

Scouting Jacksonville State Jacksonville State is coming off a 2007 season where it compiled a 4-12-1 record, including a 2-6-1 ledger in Ohio Valley Conference action. The Gamecocks had trouble on the road going winless away from the friendly confines. Last season JSU found the net only 13 times and allowed its opponents to tally 33 goals. Paige Rovillo led the Gamecocks in 2007 with nine points on three goals and three assists. Kim Kimmel followed with eight points on three goals and two helpers. With its top scorers gone in 2008 JSU is led by Kristi Pereira and her two points on one goal. Chelsea Pelletier had the assist on the Pereira goal. JSU opened the season with a 1-1 tie against Middle Tennessee State and then fell at Georgia State 4-0 on Friday.

Alabama vs. Jacksonville State: The Series Sunday’s meeting will mark the fifth time the two programs have squared off. Alabama leads the series 4-0 and posts a 3-0 mark against JSU at home. The last time the two teams met was on Sept. 19, 2004 in Tuscaloosa where UA handed JSU a 3-2 defeat, the closest margin of all four matches. In the series, the Crimson Tide has outscored the Gamecocks 18-5.

Alabama Soccer Complex The University of Alabama soccer field was the first home of UA soccer and it saw its first action on Oct. 2, 1994, as Alabama played Furman. UA earned its first victory on its home pitch on Oct. 22, 1994 against UNC Charlotte. The Tide moved into the complex in 2004 and it now hosts 1,500 fans. The Tide have compiled a 91-39-9 overall record on campus entering the 2008 campaign. Alabama has only had one losing season on the friendly confines and posted nine wins on the field in 1996 and a perfect 6-0 in the 1995 season.

The Alabama Crimson Tide has posted a 13-3 record in home openers. UA dropped its home opener last season by the score of 3-2 to Kennesaw State. Prior to the 2002 season the Crimson Tide rallied off 10 straight home opening victories. Alabama has outscored its opposition 56-12 in opening games played in Tuscaloosa.

Crimson Tide in Overtime The start to the 2008 season proved to be a thrilling one as Alabama went on the road and played Memphis to a 1-1 tie in 110 minutes of action. In the last four seasons and the Friday night opener the Crimson Tide has played in 11 overtime matches and has posted a 2-5-4 record. Last season Alabama went into extra time just once and earned a 1-1 tie to open the SEC campaign against Vanderbilt on Sept. 28, 2007. The last overtime victory for the Crimson Tide came in 2004 when Alabama handed Ole Miss a 1-0 loss in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama Picked Fourth in the West The Alabama Crimson Tide has been picked to finish fourth in the SEC Western Division as announced by the SEC preseason coaches poll. In the West, LSU was first with 62 total points (seven first-place votes) compared to Auburn’s 59 points (five first-place votes). LSU returns nine starters from last year’s squad that won the SEC Western Division with a 5-2-4 ledger in league play. Ole Miss also returns nine starters from 2007, including First Team All-SEC selection Danielle Johnson. The Crimson Tide finished with a 2-8-1 SEC mark, earning wins over Kentucky and Arkansas.

Non-Conference Action Alabama has had a lot of success in non-conference play. In the last five seasons the Crimson Tide has posted a 29-14-1 mark against non league opponents. Last season Alabama posted a 7-2 record in non-conference matches and in 2005 the Crimson Tide went 6-1 before the start of league play. UA opened the 2008 season with a 1-1 draw against reigning NCAA Tournament participant Memphis.

Returning Honorees Head coach Todd Bramble inherits a relatively young team that has some SEC award winners among them. Sophomore forward Victoria Frederick returns after leading the team in points and in goals. For her effort the Huntsville, Ala. native was named to the SEC All-Freshmen Team. In goal, Justine Bernier also garnered SEC freshmen honors after breaking the school record in saves with 145. Bernier tallied 16 saves to break the Alabama Soccer Complex record against Tennessee on Oct. 25. Senior Kailey Corken excelled not just on the field but off it as she was named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American Team.

Bernier Helps Canada to U-20 World Cup Alabama sophomore goalkeeper Justine Bernier (Oakville, Ontario) kept busy over the summer by representing her country and getting to travel the world in doing so. Bernier and team Canada sailed through the CONCACAF women’s under-20 championship to earn the title by the way of a 1-0 decision over rival USA in Mexico. The Alabama single season record holder in saves has been in the team Canada pool at the U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels. Team Canada secured a trip to Chile this November for the U-20 World Cup.

Youth Movement Four of the seven top scorers from last season were just freshmen and six of the seven returns this season. The quartet of Victoria Frederick, Carly Mygrants, Rosaly Petriello and Brooke Rogers enter their second season at the Capstone. Frederick led Alabama in points and goals while Mygrants also netted a team-high five goals. Petriello ranked third on the squad with nine points on three goals and three assists while Rogers tallied eight points, which ranked fourth on the team with three goals and two assists.

Six Seniors Look to Cap Off Alabama Career On top of the youth that helped lead Alabama in the point category last season, head coach Todd Bramble also has some veteran leadership to lean on during the transition process. Coach Bramble is welcomed to the bench by six seniors. Two seniors will anchor the backfield in Colleen Posey and Cara Kelly while at the midfield seniors Jessica Deegan, Callie Pike Kailey Corken and Jamie Zimmerman look to command the field for the Crimson Tide.

Next Time Out Next week Alabama will log the frequent flyer miles as the Crimson Tide heads to the Los Angeles area to play two matches. UA will open the trip on Friday, Sept. 5 against Cal State Fullerton at 9:30 p.m. CST and then play the reigning national champion in USC on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 3:00 p.m. CST.

First Year at Alabama Mercer, 1995 First Year 80-51-18 (7th year)

TODD BRAMBLE Head Coach First Year Mercer, 1995 80-51-18 Todd Bramble begins his first season as head coach of the University of Alabama women's soccer program in the fall of 2008. Bramble took over the Crimson Tide after a successful seven-year stint as head coach at Clemson University. During Bramble's tenure at the helm of the program, he took the Lady Tigers to the NCAA Tournament every season reaching the NCAA Elite Eight once and the NCAA Sweet 16 twice. In addition, his teams have finished in the top 25 nationally five times and have placed in the top three in the Atlantic Coast Conference three times. Bramble had an 80-51-17 overall record and did not have a losing season at Clemson. In 2007, Bramble led Clemson to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year advancing to the second round before falling to 15th-ranked Tennessee, 1-0. The Tigers posted a 10-6-5 record with victories over 23rd-ranked Long Beach State and seventh-ranked South Carolina. Bramble's Tigers played nine ranked teams in 2007 and posted an impressive 8-2-1 home record. Three Tigers earned All-ACC honors and two players were recognized as ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District. Bramble has 18 career wins over top 25 teams including two top-five wins on the road in 2004 when the Lady Tigers won at fourth-ranked Texas and fifth-ranked Texas A&M. It marked the first time in 20 years, since the men's soccer team did it in 1984, that a Clemson program defeated top-five teams in consecutive road games.

Matt Hawkey • First Year at Alabama Alma Mater, Year: Western Kentucky, 1999

Bramble's teams have had an equally impressive record in the classroom as they have had on the soccer field. The Lady Tigers have posted a 3.0 or better cumulative team grade point average all 13 semesters that he has led the team and have recorded a 3.25 or better team GPA for the last seven semesters. In addition, each of the program's seven NSCAA Academic All-American selections played under Bramble.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Alabama women’s soccer team opened the Todd Bramble era with a 1-1 draw against Memphis Friday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis. The Crimson Tide opened the scoring early but yielded a second half goal to earn the tie. After the day Alabama posts a 0-0-1 record while the Tigers move to 1-0-1 on the year. Alabama sophomore forward Victoria Frederick got the Crimson Tide on the board in the 16th minute when she beat Memphis goalkeeper Elis Kuhar-Pitters from 15 yards out off a pass from freshman Shannon Lathrop. The point for Lathrop marks a career first for the newcomer from Birmingham, Ala. Memphis evened the match in the 52nd minute when Laura Laufenberg found the back of the net from the left side off an assist by Krista Turner and Ashley Berra. Both goalkeepers clamped down the rest of the way to secure the tie for their team. The Lady Tigers out-shot the Crimson Tide 22-6 but junior Kara Gudmens kept the reigning conference USA champ at bay with eight saves in 110 minutes of action. Kuhar-Pitters made two saves for the Lady Tigers. A pair of Alabama sophomores led the team in shots. Frederick was efficient with her goal and two shots while midfielder Rosaly Petriello also got off two shots. Berra and Elaine Sedgewick paced Memphis with three shots apiece.
